So i'm going to be starting a forum. Actually I already started it. I would like to document my journey here. Honestly this is mainly just for me, so I can look back at it and see my progress etc. If you want feel free to follow the thread, if not that's fine. I'll be updating it though.

So I will not be posting the niche of the forum, or the URL of the forum either. I'm just going to document the statistics and what i'm doing to promote it etc.

    INFO:
    The forum runs on MyBB

    Plugins:

Max Post Views Guest: I installed this plugin in hopes of getting visitors to register. When a guest views 5 threads he sees a message asking him to register or login.
NumUnapproved: I have this plugin installed because I have forum section that require moderator approval before the post appears, so users can view the number of threads waiting to be approved in the UserCP.
Code Select All: This just makes it easier selecting code. Nothing more to say.
Disable Flood Time in Posts for Groups: I installed this to make premium membership look a little bit better. Premium members don't have to wait before being able to post.
Image Resizer & Optimizer with GD: This makes large images that fill the whole screen small.
My Advertisements: This allows for easy advertisement implementation.
NoLinks!: I installed this because I don't want a ton of users signing up leavening links in signatures and profiles just to get a backlink.
Page Manager: This just makes adding pages easier.
Report Once: I installed this because I don't want a ton of reports on the same post. 1 report is enough.

    Current Forum Statistics:
    NPo5Y1S.png

    19SZzFP.png

What have I done so far:
Out of 15 Registered Users 10 of these are mine. I created fake users to start conversations with in order to make the forum look active.
About 300 out of 445 threads on the forum are my own.

I have been submitting many of my posts to StumbleUpon for traffic.

    Thank you.

    Thanks.

Thanks. Yea I know it's hard, but I feel it will be rewarding. A successful forum basically runs itself.

Good luck. Creating a forum is something that I don't often see spoken about.

What I meant by large is successful. I want to build a forum that has thousands of members and basically runs itself.

So it's day two already, here are the current forum statistics:
    Nmq9Mva.png
A few users registered onto the forum. Sadly, only 1 user is actually posting. I guess the rest registered just to view content.

So I woke up this morning to check up on my forum. Here's the statistics in the morning:
    3YBJqAp.png
Also I had to ban a spam bot this morning. I perm banned the account and IP address.
    DQvKvMk.png
I also installed StopForumSpam which checks a database for spammers.
    A2o3S6z.png
Finally to keep my forum more secure I deleted the admin folder.
Without an admin folder no one can hack into the admin panel.

Whenever I need to log in, i'll just re upload the admin folder.

Shoot me a PM if you some help. Have ran a few forums in my time all on MyBB.
Here are a few mistakes people always make when starting a forum

-They have too many sections which no content.
No one likes an empty forum. Group categories. Once you have a decent amount of content being posted daily then you can think about adding sub sections.

    -To many staff members
Staff are there to moderate the forum. What a lot of forums seem to do is have 5-6 mods/admins when there really is no need.

    -Off topic sections
It's alright to have a general/lounge section but pointless running a wildlife site (just an example) then have tons of sections related to gaming, music, technology etc.. Keep it niche related

I could sit here all day but there is a few of the main ones.
    Good luck

Thank you for the tips and the offer.

Sadly due to the nature of the forum, I don't want anyone to know i'm running this forum. It might be more on the blackhat side of things, if that makes sense.

-They have too many sections which no content.
I'm guilty of this. I have a bit to much sections, but so far each section is filling up. I won't be adding more sections for a long time.

    -To many staff members
Currently i'm the only staff member and I plan to keep it that way for a very long time. I'm relying on users reporting posts.

    -Off topic sections
We just have one general lounge section. It's kind of dead though right now. I definitely won't be adding more sections until the forum grows more.

So my host seems to be having problems. It can't support a small forum.

I see error pages constantly and the website loads pretty slow.

    Going to be switching soon.

Bulletproof VPS (I'm not affiliated with them and stuff), they do a good job and they're offshore.
