I have two windows open now: BHW and a joomla ebook, kind of funny that I saw this thread.
Joomla is fantastic. I've been using it for awhile on a basic level and I'm getting into a few of the more advanced aspects of Joomla today.
Its a bit harder to get started with Joomla than it is with Wordpress, but in the long run Joomla's functionality makes it well worth while.
Joomla sites also have a very unique look and feel, which is a definite plus

It all depends on what one want to do. A simple blog with still way hot and cool functions - wordpress. Community site, real estate site, hotel site, corporation site etc I would go for Joomla. Joomla isn't the best to use for e-stores and I would then go for OsCommerce (maybe with a bridge ot Joomla).
But when it comes to other factors like ranking one can do good with Joomla but there's way too many components and modules not focusing on getting a clean code, and even Joomla core in itself spits out some bad shit so it's way easier to rank well (generic WH) with a WP blog. WP have a beutiful and pretty clean code.
For what most IM's normally needs WP should be their first choice I think.
WP is also easier to learn and easier to maintain.

im having trouble getting joomla to install, this is the first time im using it. ive uploaded the joomla bit via FTP, and when i try install it asks me for mySQL username and password, as well as the database name. i havent decided what site im gonna make, so i have not set up a mySQL database yet? do you have to make the database before hand?
