Joomla vs. Wordpress

I've never used Joomla or drupal so I have no idea.

Which one is easier to set up?
Which one is better for SEO and promotion?

Why?

There's been plenty of threads on this already sadly.

You're going to get hundreds of people who have never even looked at another CMS claiming that wordpress is the best, and the oldest, and you're a fool for considering using anything else...

Personally I'm currently a BIG fan of http://www.concrete5.org/ because it's a really sensible approach to CMS!
(Sadly though most of the time it's more expedient to slap a wordpress site up and forget about it... curse my pragmatism)

Well CMS' dictate how you can use the site (or even worse force you to use a template ) and everything you do needs to follow their format.
In Concrete 5, you design a website THEN tell the CMS how the various sections are handled.
Basically it approaches the entire thing from the opposite direction of other CMS', and if you've ever scratched your head wondering why Wordpress is so shit you'll understand why thats a good thing (I've only used Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress, but I've been reading up on Concrete 5 alot recently and I'm liking what I hear!)

Actualy I had a Joomla based website back in 2009. In terms of SEO - it was #1 in its niche without any SEO effort (back in the days I really knew NOTHING), I only was bookmarking it.

And then it got hacked.

Lesson learned.
Unless they've fixed their security problems, but from what I've seen on their forums some months ago they haven't.

I have to agree with 0_inspirations first paragraph. Wordpress is easy and everyone uses
it. I think joomla or drupal are far more pleasing on the eye and just as easy to learn if you
can be bothered.
Personally I like html and constantly add new pages to feed the google monster.

Joomla and wordpress are two different things. Joomla = CMS Wordpress = Blog. (Assuming you made a mistake in the title)

Out of Joomla and Drupal, I would definitely go with Joomla.

And yes I do use cms we can't all work to our preferences.
I see you're becoming successful with your business, what I found was I have to have ammo for
every situation therefore I have to become adapt in all areas of the services I offer.
I wouldn't want to walk into a meeting and be ambushed into demonstrating something I
didn't know about.
I do find that besides the SEO advantages the less knowledgeable will go for WP because
all they have to do is click fantasico, install a theme and a few plugins and say "what a clever boy am I?"
Also referring to a post further down the line more themes and plugins are made for WP because that is the market.
If you are a coder you want to be writing things that sell.

Thats true they've left me a picture of a burning man on a wheel chair saying "you have got pawned by xxx".
And the truth is back in those days any noob who red a simple tutorial about sql injection could hack joomla.

Any ideas how the things are looking right now?

All of the best premade plugins and themes for IM are usually made in WP, so it just doesn't make sense to switch.

I know. Thats why I find it so odd that people preach about Joomla sites ranking so easily. Whats so special about them? Just light code?

I don't know.

I just did a quick search and found two pages that said out of the box, Joomla isn't optimized for SEO well.

Maybe these posts are outdated, or someone knows something we don't. Would really love to see the opinion of a Joomla IM guru.

They are outdated as the new Joomla 1.6 is the one which is good for SEO.

Wordpress is a CMS designed to manage blogs.
Drupal, Joomla etal are CMS' designed to manage websites.

That's quite an important distinction don't you think?

Thank you 0 for shedding light on that. I didn't know. I've used wordpress and modified to make websites.

Well to be fair wordpress is getting better everyday, and the plugins are really nice
(And there's TONS of sites for which it is the best choice, but you couldn't do a youtube or wikipedia on it without driving yourself insane)

Okay heres a question. If youre good at either one, which one can you build a nice site in FASTER??

I would say joomla. Much feature, much control and much easier.

I've been using frontpage, mostly the html part of it and the editor for quick previews here and there. Trying WP currently and finding it a real crap. 0 configurability and control, there is no way to turn off basic things like RSS feeds other than hacking source files which then breaks stuff that relies on these files. Problem is, you don't know that until you find great viagra deals approx. 15 minutes later all nicely formatted on the home page.

The stupid constant pinging is an issue too since it's an enabler for a handful of BH tactics which I am not going to discuss but will say that monitoring pinging services can get you a long way. It just sucks when others do it to you.

It seems impossible to have a stealth blog, it can either be locked down for anybody including SEs, users, archivers or wide open. Again more hacking around robots.txt. Autoadding a metatag? Forget it. Either use some 'plugin' with who knows what vulnerabilities or edit the source of each post/page manually. BTW they seem to differentiate between a page and a post - the one is static and invisible to SEs (?), the other is not static (?) and visible to SEs(?).

Then there are the comments; in the documentation you get to read about posting a comment and commenting a post and both refer to the same thing. But not when the admin adds comments to his OWN post, these are 'commenting your own post'. Wait, I am confused...

On top of that, there are the fanboys on every forum that reply to any reasonable question with 'why do you need it' or 'use fantastico'? Reminds me of the adobe forums according to which you should reformat the hard drive when the page numbering stops working.

Finally, you don't know what exactly gets leaked when WP phones home (when you log in, logout, check for updates, don't check for updates, install plugins, remove plugins, themes etc. etc). The answer to that: 'use a packet sniffer if you're that curious, just install it on your webserver'?!?

Either I am too spoiled, too old or in the process of becoming a desperate schizo.
