CMS's are for building a client's site

9 times out of 10 if your'e building a site for yourself only, you would not need a cms because you know how to manipulate the source code

But more importantly, any cms weighs down your source-code which means search engines will have more crap to wade through and find less of your keywords on each visit
 
True, but I dont have the time to design graphics and write code. I just want the damn thing done in an hour.

And apparently Joomla is really light on code because of the CSS it uses.

Good choice to go with Joomla - there are way more themes, plugins etc floating around than for Drupal

If you only need something to set up quickly, then is it more a matter of choosing a system that you get to know.

You can use Wordpress for almost everything. Blog, website and even for a webshop. And if you pack together all your plugins, then can you set up a full working website with all plugins and settings in less than 10 min.

Joomla have to my knowledge more plugins and are mainly used for websites and communities (forum and social solutions). But it can be used as a Blogging system and webshop as well.

I'm using both and like both CMS solutions. But as I said - just pick one and become familiar with that CMS system, if you only need to make a quick website now and then.

I would go with Wordpress as it is getting more popular day by day and its plugins are the best!
 
This debate is getting interested.

For me Wordpress is the only solution at the moment, because I do not know any thing about coding, PHP etc etc.Thanks to the BHW threads that I started my first website with Wordpress month ago, and I got surprised at my own ability of building a website Lolx Thousand of theme and plugin available... Yesterday I created 2 big website just in 8 hours thanks to wordpress.

I don't know the technical stuff like How safe is wordpress website or Blog but for now and quick result I am using Wordpress.
 
In my opinion joomla and wordpress both are great. But The discussion is awesome.
 
I have a client who has a Joomla site so I'm going to have to learn to SEO it properly unless I feel like remaking it (which I don't :) ) I believe there are some plugins out there for it which I need to get over the weekend. The backend of Joomla is quite nice though

If all goes well I'll write up a quick tut on what you need to get for SEO'ing a Joomla site
 
So i'm trying to find a decent joomla design thats free, but they're all totally hideous. At least wordpress had decent designs...

This is one of the main reasons I converted from Joomla to Wordpress.
 
joomla is better but harder to learn and use end of story. You have to ask yourself how much time do you want to dedicate to the site. If you are not going to spend much time on making it unique then go wordpress. Joomla allows for almost endless personal configuration if you know what you are doing. That is its beauty and it's downfall. If you want to slap up a site that you will only spending an hour or 2 a week on. Then Joomla isn't for you.

As for security problems with joomla. yes some exist but wordpress has plenty also! If you have a blog running wordpress pre version 2.9 then watchout, you are about to be hacked. because plenty of people are gunning for you. A simple sql insertion will force you to link to any site the hacker wants from your footer. Autoblogs are prime targets for this as the owners usually set and forget.
 
I tried to set up a joomla site and couldn't figure it out after a few hours of trying, so I gave up.

Even if you have no intention of having a blog, you can make wordpress work, so I just stick with that. My only limitation are the themes that are available. Sometimes when you are looking for something for a specific niche or need, they just all look awful - so you have to know how to customize a better looking template to fit what you had in mind.

And how many websites do you have up ? When one is starting out in this game they naturally run to WP as a first platform. After you've been here a while and gain knowledge you look to other solutions to fit the niche your trying to promote.

This is not a one size fits all area. Different platforms fit different things better than others. I made my first few sites with FrontPage before learning about WordPress. After that I starting investigating the benefits of other ways to see if they where a fit for what I wanted to accomplish.

FrontPage, WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, CS5 all are niche platforms. The truly good web developer picks the one that does what HE/SHE needs it to do.

Then again the really advanced ones just write the code themselves.
 
Well, most of us are marketers here, and we don't intend on spending a long time designing sites.

Can you tell us a little about what situations you would use each platform in?

FrontPage... Quick and easy static pages. I use this for one page sites,squeeze pages, or for a clickbank product.

WordPress... Quick to market and with the right plug ins you can make it into just about anything. However with more and more plug ins you sometimes run into the law of unintended consequences.

Joomla... To me this is a good platform for E-commerce.

Drupal... Haven't explored it's possibilities as of yet. That said it is worth looking into.

CS5... Good product if your going for lots of visuals.

It's early and I've only had one cup of coffee. Hope I'm not rambling on too much here.
 
Wordpress is the future.Its way ahead of "just blog".The search engines love it,and the truth is that if you're NOT using WP,you are in serious disadvantage.
