Google isn't and has to answer to shareholers, and when this kind of stories about Google reading your mail become mainstream people will stop using Google and their products hurting their bottom line. It is out here but for most people it is still a very abstract thing, but when it becomes clear that Google is reading your emails they will feel it in their pockets

They don't even have to spy on you to use your data, because automated scripts can look at what you are doing on gmail, google docs etc. and then they will conclude if you do blackhat stuff or not. I am 100% sure google is using that against blackhat.

Google will do everything they can to stop annoying their shareholders. Do not be funny thinking Google wouldn't do it. They think they are too big to fall. Have you seen what they have done to YouTube ? In the last few months, YouTube has became almost useless for both video uploaders and viewers ruining the whole service

Guys... Gmail and WMT's is not enough. If you want to be a true blackhatter, and protect your valuable web properties, you should avoid using computers altogether. Don't use keyboards, don't hold a mouse (mice?), don't connect to Wi-Fi. If you have an Android cellphone, format it and install Apple's mobile OS. If you have an iPhone, format it and install android OS but use hotmail for your email not Gmail. Next, tilt your head slightly to the side, consider the evil greed of Monsanto, and then close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Now re-join us on Earth, and don't go out to space anymore.

Some time ago, way before the Snow Don, I said something about Stellar Winds on this forum. I got laughed at. I was told it was technically impossible to achieve. For the record, the Snow Don didn't say anything new other than most encryption methods are cracked but that part didn't surprise me. This goes well beyond indexing the net and its users, the goal was to even listen to walkie talkies and other radio signals, globally. When you know it is technically possible to use a satellite to listen to vibrations in windows caused by human voices...
The above is just to show what people think and what actually happens.
G is a company that specializes in information gathering and yet people think they won't take every chance to do so. Even when they can just include it in their ToS to legalize it and will testify in court that people don't use G expecting privacy, as they have. (Also, you can go blackhat to find enough information to send you in the right direction when following up with legal means, even cops use this method.)
A few years ago they mapped my country, in the process they hacked all poorly protected networks they came across. After people found out it was claimed a mistake. Computers get told what to do, hacking networks doesn't happen by accident. They promised to delete the data and apologized for the "mistake", stocks didn't flinch.
OP, I don't agree with all your alternatives and feel the world is better served when people actually care enough to find their own solutions but I do want to thank you for creating this thread. It was needed.
To the nay sayers I would just like to translate this proverb from Dutch: "Once the calf has drowned the waterhole is filled up.".
The calf can be replaced, not your privacy. People should say: "Why do you have a need to know?" instead of: "I have nothing to hide.".
The thing I wonder about, actually, is if it technically possible to index the jr VIP section for instance using someone that has legitimate access and does a query. Not if it is legal, just if it is possible. If so: ....!

Being paranoid pays off. People tend to underestimate the scale of tracking Google does - it seems too grandiose to be true. Yet its there.
The most important part is to create a sinkhole for tracking domains, e.q. redirect domains like googleanalytics.com to 0.0.0.0 in your hosts file. Otherwise you're like an open book to Google.
Yandex metrica is MUCH better than Google analytics. It allows you to see the behavior of your visitors as a movie. You just pick someone, press the play button, and enjoy the show. That feature alone makes it worth to switch from GA to Metrica. Privacy comes as benefit.
A good alternative to Chrome is Opera. For once its a Swedish company, hence if your own privacy is important for you Opera is much less likely to expose your browsing habits to the interested parties. Unlike in US, they respect privacy in Sweden.
Since, not everybody is a fan of Opera. There is a webkit alternative from Indian company: http://www.epicbrowser.com/ I havent checked the browser personally, but it looks promising.

Guys, I got an idea! Let's make Google reading our gmail not work, by creating a bunch of fake SEO service providers and registering thousands of gmail accounts and send fake SEO reports. The reports can say stuff like Wikipedia is buying sape links! Can you imagine, they'll deindex Wikipedia! AAAAHAHAHAHA! Looking forward to the "Oh, hello Wikipedia" on Matt's Twitter! LOLOLOL!

But in all seriousness I would love to stop using Google services. Its just going to be a b*tch to make the change. I have yet to find an email service/interface that I like better than gmail. I have no problem ditching Google analytics and WMT though because their data is pure crap.
This is something everyone should be considering and I am very serious about never giving my gmail (or any email that forwards to a gmail) as the email to deliver service reports ordered here.

They want your phone number. Not a good option for personal mail anymore.
Opera software is company from Norway, not Sweden. Those are separate countries for few hundred years already.

Great heads up about Mega. That company takes privacy and internet freedom more seriously than others. I definitely suggest swituching to is as a cloud backup source.

Man I think Gmail is overrated. I know Microsoft isnt' a company to trust, either, but they dont' have the same impact on the SEO community and their Outlook platform is sooo much better and more powerful. The way you can manage multiple email accounts and integrate with Skydrive, Office and their other platforms. Top notch/1
