First of all, no, chromium is not entirely google free, and neither is firefox. Both use the anti-malware system which checks sites before letting you through, and guess who runs that? (HINT safebrowsing.clients.google.com)

So periodically the browser phones back and requests a new list.

Also, chromium is by default activated for the autosuggest lists and will phone back your current url in order to suggest candidate sites for autocomplete URL, which is chrome's biggest spyware.

I don't use chrome but I recall inspecting its privacy settings one day(it's in the advanced page, you gotta go through hoops to get there) and it has like 7 or 8 switches you gotta turn off in order for it not to phone back all your data to google in some way or another. All these features are in chromium too.

Safe alternatives? Midori or konqueror are two alternatives, but aren't great browsers. Best path is to build firefox yourself and search the source code for anything related to google and IP's that belong to google.

First , for google who like chrome, you can use Comodo Dragon. It uses Chrome engine but it adds privacy

As for privacy, I'm not really paranoid but I take simple route

I install VMware with windows 7 on my pc. Before installing anything I change my Mac Address, when I install my browse I Protect my DNS and use Hotspotshield when windows starts up.

I have my fake gmail account logged in with google plus and everything is doing just find. I use this for my site building, adding articles, designs, theme installations and all regular stuff

I have another VMware with the same privacy but I rarely use browsers on it. It's for my Backlinking and Blackhat stuff

To Conclude : one VM for my internet privacy and the other for my Blackhat techniques

I always had my doubts about Chrome privacy and was never really comfortable with it. Yet, I used it because I thought it was fast. Yesterday however, thanks to this post, I moved over all my bookmarks to IE. Yes, IE! It actually is pretty quick and I thought YouTube videos actually loaded faster on IE than in Chrome! Bing isn't bad for search either but I personally prefer duckduckgogo.com, despite the ridiculous name.

I only use Waterfox, for browsing. It's open source and faster than Firefox, for me.
