ISP vs Residential Proxies - Users' Experience - Everything You Need to Know

Hey BHW forum members!

Our team's been seeing the same proxy-related questions pop up daily, but most answers online are either too vague or overly generalized. So we decided to share our company’s viewpoint — based on what we’ve tested and what our users have been reporting. So, let’s start with the basics:

Where do these IPs come from?

Mostly through SDKs in mobile apps and desktop programs.
Users install a free VPN or some utility and exchange their IP into the pool.
They may access this knowledge but nobody reads the agreement. (no one does)

What are Residential Proxies?

These are IP addresses from regular home users. When you are using resi proxies, websites see you as a normal person (as if you’re using home Wi-Fi and surfing through the web).
Usually can be purchased in format - Pay per GB
Key points:
  • Pool sizes: millions of IPs worldwide
  • Can be rotating or sticky
  • IPs can drop randomly when source device goes offline

What are ISP Proxies?

Physically they are in datacenters on servers just like traditional datacenter proxies, but the IP addresses are registered under real home providers: Deutsche Telekom AG, Verizon, Xfinity, T-Mobile Home etc. For websites, these IPs look residential - but you get datacenter speed and stability. Pools are small - only thousands of IPs, not millions.
Usually can be purchased in format - Pay per IP
Key points:
  • Pool sizes: hundreds to thousands, not millions
  • Usually static - same IP as long as you pay
  • Fast and stable 24/7
Residential use cases:

Auto-reg account creation (Google, Instagram, Telegram)

Why:
  • Usually a larger pool of IPs, creating accounts on datacenter proxies or without proxies at all can be high-risk, platforms have IP score checker, resi proxies give you better trust on platforms. They give you a fresh IP for each acc. No clustering, no ‘domino effect’.
What platforms check:
  • IP reputation and digital print of it
  • ASN type - they know datacenter ASN pools
  • How many accounts were created and activities were done using this IP
  • GEO of the IP
Why ISP fails here:
  • High Risk of Clustering due to small IP pool. Accounts cluster on the same limited subnet, platforms track this subnet’s patterns, therefore one subnet can ban hundreds of your accounts at once.

Automation for programmed account actions (Likes, Follows, Comments, DMs, etc.)
Why:
  • Running automation tools request IPs that won't trigger security checks and rate limits. It works because actions come from IPs that are seen as normal by the platform.
What platforms check:
  • Interaction and time-of-day (amount actions per day) patterns
  • Accounts age (date of registration) vs activity level
  • Action velocity per IP (actions per timing)
Why ISP fails here:
  • Same as for autoreg - high Risk of Clustering due to small pool.
  • ISPs here are perceived as suspicious because there are not much actions on this IP

Media buying (Facebook Ads, Google Ads, TikTok Ads)
Why:
  • Ad platforms are paranoid about fraud
  • Looks like regular business owner or manager managing ads from home
What platforms check:
  • IP when creating ads and adding payment methods
  • IP location vs billing address
  • How many ad accounts touched this IP before
Why ISP fails here:
  • Some ISP ranges completely banned from ad account creation
  • Facebook has flagged tons of ISP subnets already
  • Google Ads tracks ISP patterns, especially for new accounts

ISP use cases:

Honorary mention to Regional Pricing Access (cheaper)
ISP from cheaper regions gives you cheaper prices (YouTube Premium in Argentina, Spotify in Turkey, etc.). Save your money, friend.

Streaming Services (Netflix, Disney+, HBO)
Why:
  • Streaming burns too much of a bandwidth, one movie can cost $50+ on residential.
    ISP gives consistent speed - quick loading without disconnects. Very effective in case you resell: connect > buy > done.
What platforms check:
  • Multiple accounts on same IP
  • Simultaneous streams from different IPs
Why residential fails here:
  • 4K streaming at a rate of $5/GB $50+ per movie - watching in such quality would take up to 10GB - Nobody’s paying for that. More disconnects due to inconsistency of IPs.

Gaming / Farming (IP Ban Bypass)
Why:
  • Gaming traffic is heavy - voice chat, game traffic consume bandwidth quickly. Monthly cost is low (because you don't purchase GB - that would require too much traffic), connection is stable for regular use. If one IP gets banned you can switch to another, it’s still cheaper. A fresh static ISP IP makes you become a ‘new user’ because it gives you a clean, static one, so use it as your new identity.
What platform check:
  • Geographic consistency but account says USA but IP is from Germany = red flag
  • HWID + IP combo
  • IP reputation, IP history, IP type
Why residential fails here:
  • As mentioned above, it’s too expensive due to high consumption of bandwidth. Connection unstable, disconnects promised. Better stay effective with your budget and not waste money and nerves on continuous connection failures.

API Requests / Parsing Bots / Monitoring (24/7 Operations)
Why:
  • Stable connection 24/7 - no random drops like residential
  • Looks like regular server, not suspicious rotating traffic
What platform check:
  • Rate limits - there could be limits on IP quantity, therefore are limited
  • How many API keys are being used from the same IP
Why residential fails here:
  • Connections drop randomly
  • Per-GB pricing makes 24/7 operations too expensive
  • Rotating IPs can look more suspicious for API access because many IPs are using 1 key.

Yeah, it'd work for both IG and TikTok, IP doesn't change so it's less sus for social media platforms
 
This is a very comprehensive tutorial and good job for putting togheter. I want to ask do they work this even for site with higher security or just social media ? Like if i want to connect to ebay , paypal?

Thank! ISP generally work well for social media and standard websites. However, high-security platforms like eBay or PayPal have advanced detection systems. In some cases, they may identify traffic coming from large ISP proxy pools and restrict access. For those platforms, residential IPs with proper session management are typically more effective. Hope this helps
 
good breakdown. from my experience the main practical difference between ISP and residential comes down to session stability vs trust level. ISP proxies give you a static ip that doesn't change which is great for account management where you need consistency, but if that ip gets burned you're stuck with it. residential proxies rotate and give you access to a huge pool, but the tradeoff is that you can't guarantee the same ip twice.

for social media accounts i lean toward ISP because platforms track ip consistency and flag accounts that jump between ips. for scraping and data collection, residential wins because you need volume and rotation to avoid rate limits. mobile proxies sit above both in terms of trust but the cost per gb makes them impractical for heavy data use.
