So as we all know content is king blah blah...

In my niche there are some massive players, big technology sites, CNET and the like... my questions...

Is it ok to see what these big players are talking about, read their latest articles etc.. then do your own version of the same subject in your own words?

EG:
CNET - What is the latest must have gadget in August 2013?

ME - The Best Gadget you must own in August 2013

I would basically be copying the article, but in y own words so it stays 'unique'

If you are talking about nicely spun, human readable content, yes it's white hat. However, you must note that Google considers "appreciably similar" content as duplicate content.


 
if it uses the same article structure, same things talked about it the same order, basically just the same article but with variations on words then it is spun, however if its all hand spun and reads well then there should be no problem with it in terms of SEO.
 
Yes, that's whitehat. It's pretty much what 99% of tech sites are doing anyway!
 
Cool, it would be manually done, by me, so no risk of being 'that similar'

I was more interested if it would be considered white hat.

A lot of small and big players do this. What I usually do is rewrite the article and add a "personal review" element to it sometimes even include a snippet of similar gadgets which points to other pages therefore, making the visitor stay longer on my blog. Use the big player's site as a resource by getting a bit of info in each of them and combining these info's into your own article plus, adding your own insights and reviews to make yours stand out.
 
Yes it is white hat as far as article as readable and spun but do not expect to gain any rank cause you have same article with big places.
 
You can borrow the subject of the articles and write your own version - no problem with that. If you are putting duplicate content on their site, you will need to link to them to avoid getting in trouble with the search engines.
 
It's not whitehat, it's article rewriting :-) .
If you think will you be caught with duplicate content, it depends in which percent you spin it.
 
Read what they are talking about and then write your own article, in your own words.
