Hi I am trying to rank a website for keyword "Wedding photographer" in Hong Kong which is pretty competitive so I was amazed to find this site kellywongphotography number one on SERP for google hong kong I am massively confused, how can he rank so high with nearly no backlinks and a PR of 0. The second site is on SERP is PR5 with thousands of genuine backlinks. So the question is

Is kelly wong photography‎ using black hat SEO? and what strategy is he employing because whatever it is, google seems to love it.

I checked on Majestic SEO and the site has very low trust flow and just seems to go against all the theories of SEO to rank that high.

Have you checked you with different tools? maybe the site is blocking ahrefs and majesticSEO. and yes, what about its social signals?

Well if its a new site, there may be some BH SEO done.
Go Whitehat if you're going long term. Since its photography, choose the long run

For me that site doesn't even show among the top 20. But there are a lot of ads and local listings that would get most part of the biz long before anybody looks at organic results.

Check his social profiles that point to the website. If your doing it for a business in Hong Kong I recommend using white hat methods to still have the client and show you are improving SERPS monthly and climbing your way to the top. But I guess his site went "viral" and could be dripping 1k likes retweets etc through social media daily. Lastly check his domain age and the other competitors EMD cause that can play a big role

89 page likes and no twitter I have no idea how this guy does it. I screens hotted the majestic but cannot post as I am a new member

2 referring domains, only 14 external backlinks ! facebook page has only 89 likes !! its a mystery

This is important to consider.

Also keep in mind that the local algo and the global algo are quite different. Or at least that's what I speculate...
The site in question doesn't show up at all for me under the terms 'wedding photographer' (predictably) and 'wedding photographer in hong kong.' Location changes everything. With this in mind I doubt you'll be able to find much help here

It is difficult to figure out what they may be doing as they could well be hiding their backlinks from ahrefs and majestic plus they may have redirects and plenty of other stuff not easy to figure out.

Why would I bother to out someone I would have to out a lot of ppl to get to the top !, I am just curious how someone with such a small backlink profile could get to the top, when searching for local just use google HK rather than google should see home come up then.

Gforce180, does he have a g+ page ? does he have a g places listing ? Is his location very central in HongKong ?
