Is there any money in emailing small businesses with ugly websites, and asking them if they would like you to redesign them for them? It's pretty simple to do, you just need basic knowledge of coding. You just get a template off Themeforest and basically plug in information.
So how much money do you think you could make off of this?

Where there's demand there's a profit to be made.

Won't know for sure unless you try it out!

There is definitely money to be made there. They have already been convinced that they need a website, which is the hard part. Now that they have one, you have to do your part in informing them that their website isn't appealing to the eye. Show them examples of what competitors sites look like and then some of your work samples. Explain that other people are seeing their competitors better looking website and that they are getting more business simply because it's design looks better.
Now go take action and find out for yourself, like Beven said.

Of course there's money in that. Especially if you go to local shops personally and take your portfolio over, a notebook computer or ipad and show your previous work.

99% of local shops in my hometown have crappy websites, but they also don't realize the power of the WWW yet so I used to have to convince them and they didn't want to pay proper development hours, which took a lot of work with little reward so eventually I dropped that part of my web development work.

If you're able to streamline this, sell lots of quality small sites and then not waste thousands of hours in tech support, then there's money to be made there.

Pay them a visit.... Usually, shop owners don't check email, your email is checked by someone without any relation to their WWW presence.

Is there anyway to find the owners email directly? I don't really want to visit, because I am 17 and I fear I will not be taken seriously.

People on this forum have found success in using their young age as an incentive. Give them the excuse that you're trying to save up for college or something. They'll eat that up.

If you come off as confident in the way you approach people, and have a solid way to convince them (a good portfolio, graphs of how an attractive website can bring them more money, etc) - they won't care if you're young. If you have the skills, your age won't matter. This is where the price will prove that - don't underprice your services, give them a serious price and they will also take you seriously.

Sure it is a great idea and do not forget to upsell them on a SEO package to go a long with it too. :)
