the official irc was almost completely dead by the time it closed a year ago
there just isn't any demand for it any more

That is not going to happen either... there has been plenty of discussion about that and reviving that sort of thing is not something that BHW management has an interest in backing/endorsing/promoting.

Yeah, I get impulsive/dumb ideas very often. I even created a thread in the suggestion sub-forum. But I soon realized how such a thing could (a.) drive content away from the forum to these platforms and (b) increase the time spent making sure rules are followed.
I feel a lot smarter than I was in the morning when I posted it xD

thing is with a site as large in its scope and user count as bhw is it's most natural that the irc channel's dead - i'm guessing the vast majority of users don't know each other (zero or no personal correspondence) and the few who do have more private means of communication (whatsapp groups ) . new arrivals are always arriving at a dead channel, and the momentum of cyclical causation keeps it that way .
if the admins/mods incentivized presence and participation on the channel (e.g. contests) to get past that initial investment threshold, maybe it'd work. but the payoff (overall, for all parties concerned) could be huuge.
