Would my placement in Google's search results be effected by a small number of outbound links to businesses that aren't related to mine?
Is there a negative impact for outbound links?

If you sell Guest Posts on your website, and have constant outbound links that's when you get a manual Outbound Link penalty. I would also be careful linking out to unrelated sites. You should be fine if you don't overdo it, but why risk it, unless they're paying you then that's another story.

The problem is, the more you do something unexpected, the closer you will be to a threshold, that may lead to a ranking drop.
A small number should be fine, the more you add, the more unnatural it will look.
Like putting salt on your steak, a bit is fine, a lot is disgusting.
