Technical SEO is mostly needed for mega sites, where you are more concerned all your crawling, are the bots are blocked. For almost most of the sites, its not needed.

Technical SEO is essential. Without proper crawling, indexing, and site speed, content and backlinks lose impact. A strong technical foundation ensures search engines understand and rank your site effectively.

aren't mobile friendliness and loading speeds also part of technical SEO? Because I thought that they are and - if that's true - these are very important things, even moreso for fresh / new / small sites than "mega sites" as you call them, as these sites need every bit of optimization they can get initially, until they gain google's trust and can safely break some SEO rules and still rank)
 
Technical SEO is the baseline. If Google cannot crawl your site properly or if your server is dragging, your high quality content is basically invisible. I have seen sites with great articles stuck on page 4 just because their site architecture was a mess or their mobile rendering was broken.

I always start with the technical side before I even think about content or links. I check Search Console for indexation errors, site speed, and how internal links are distributed. If you have a thousand pages but they aren't linked properly from your main categories, Google isn't going to give them much weight.

Building links to a slow, buggy site is like pouring water into a leaky bucket. You are working twice as hard for half the results. I prefer fixing the technical foundation first so the content and links can actually perform.

Precisely... for smaller sites it's just a waste of time.

Technical SEO is a core part of the foundation. If crawlability, site speed, and structure aren’t solid, even good content and backlinks won’t perform fully.

I usually fix technical basics first, then focus on content and links.

It’s not flashy, but it makes everything else work better.

As a beginner, I think technical SEO is very important. Even with good content and backlinks, a slow or poorly structured website can hurt rankings and visibility in search results.
