It also costs you nothing to get an SSL at https://letsencrypt.org/ so why not?

SSL is an extremely insignificant ranking factor; in imaginary cases where every tiny lil thing is the same and SSL is the only difference between pages - then it may be considered as a winning point. Otherwise - there`s basically no proven boost in rankings due to switching to https, moreover - I know cases when site owners switched hastily and provoked more unexpected issues by that instead of getting any profit. Aslo, it`s reasonable to get SLL in case your website is carying any kind of sensitive or credit data, but in case it doesn`t - you may simply increase your pages` load time. In terms of security it also doesn`t stop or prevent hacking attacks in any way.

I SSL everything now.
Wordpress will be working towards encouraging everyone to move towards SSL, Google chrome will be labelling non-SSL sites as not secure... for the sake of a $9 certificate you may as well just do it.
Besides... why would spammers put SSL certificates on spammy sites? You also need a dedicated IP for your website to set one up, so again you're not going to have the bad neighbourhood issue of sharing shared hosting IP's with other spammy sites.
And it's a ranking factor, even though it's a small one...
It makes sense on every level.

Actually I don't think there is a need to buy a certificate.
Cloudflare has this feature built in on the free plan. So basically if you add your site to cloudflare, you have the option to activate the SSL via Cloudflare and your website will force https every time it loads.

These are the people who use $1 namecheap domains for their fiverr gig churn and burn projects.
If they just spent $20 more per site on a .com and a $9 SSL their sites would last 3 times longer and they would make 3 times more money.

You need not to spend $9 on ssl certificate you can get free SSL from lets encrypt.

You get a shared SSL on their free plan. If you want your own through them it's $5/month.
People don't believe being cheap costs them anything. That's why they continue being cheap and we've got a race to the bottom going when it comes to pricing important things like SEO and content writing. You get what you pay for.

As others stated it's free if the host supports letsencrypt or startssl certs. Afaik there was many disussions about letsencrypt and that phishers would get ssl certs to make it look and feel more secure.
That's not fully right. With Server Name Indication (SNI) -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Name_Indication you can have multiple certs on one dedicate ip.
As the IPv4 adress space seems to fill up SNI gets more and more important until the net is full IPv6 capable. 3 or 4 years ago it was easy for me to get /29 subnets from RIPE by adding "need dedicated ips for SSL".
But now a days it's a bit more complicated to get the subnets - at least for me.
