Is SEO dead?

My vote for the name of the next update is "Platypus"

Are you serious? I'll indulge as you are probably scaring some newbies... SEO will never die. For every search query there are thousands and thousands of options to deliver to the searcher, how else will Google know which is best?

Only social signals you say? That is in the definition of SEO by the way. But what about the thousands of niches no one wants to be social about, porn, medical, weird hobbies, etc?

"Soon Google will just read your whole page, see what you're about, and rank you strictly on content!" Nope, too much resources needed, you give Google far too much credit. The search engines need SEO's. The search engine is our bi$%h.

It's simply pushing for better quality in all regards. When I first started here I read that blackhat should be used as a stepping stone to whitehat (well, greyhat. Nothing is ever white.). A little hard work always pays off.

I agree with everything EXCEPT we are the search engine's bitch since we have to comply with all their rules. Which means we are in their mercy.

SEO is not dead.. but the definition of SEO has changed. When google brought in the concept of pr, SEO just meant backlinks, then it evolved and it became high pr backlinks, then it became relevant and authority backlinks, then the concept of linkwheel and link pyramids came up. Now social shares and zero backlinks are working out well. It might change soon. Either we should adapt to the change else we should focus on alternate traffic sources (or both).

Threads like this make me wonder how so many of you function in this industry as a main source of income.

Testing, testing and testing again, until you find another uncovered leak by G.

Waht you mean by DEAD? how it could be dead? There are many people ranking well in google (including me) and the one who doesnt know how to do proper seo feels like DEAD..

I am serious guys, I guess I cracked googles' code!
See, first it was Panda, then Penguin.
My bets are on Orca, Zebra, Manta and all other monochrome animals.

SEO will never die!!! My next animal vote is the mighty "Python".

SEO has been too easy. I'm looking forward to an increase in the barriers to entry so that a pre-requisite of making money with SEO is that you understand SEO and are not braindead.
