I think if there are any links that you think are causing issues it would be wise to remove them before sending the request.
I just wanted to add to what I wrote above about press releases. These remain a great way to get exposure for a brand and I don't recommend avoiding them entirely. My comments mainly pertain to link building. Sending out a press release is a great way to get in front of a lot of eyes with the backlink being sort of a "bonus". So if you are doing press releases without links it would be great for your business/website to get them in as many places as possible, just be careful when there are links included in the release as a sudden spike in anchor text (that is all the same phrase) or links in general can do more to harm your site than help it.
