No I don't think it's dead. Link diversity is essential to a well-balanced backlinking structure.

It's not dead. What you don't want to do is to distribute your press release to a bunch of crappy sites. Just use 1-2 high quality sites or find a services that does that.

If you don't have many backlinks pointing to your site I see 2 problems with press releases:

    1. You will have the same anchor text on all your press releases which might have a negative impact on your rankings
    2. Your press release might get distributed to many spammy sites which might also have a negative impact on your site

I usually find a service that writes a press release and puts it on one of the high quality press release sites.

It all depends of what press release service you are using.
You have press release services from $25 to $150+
In the end is what you pay is what you get.

If you are using commercial anchor texts within a press release, then yes, it's dead.
If you're publishing bullshit press releases that nobody will read, then yes, it's dead.
If you're using branded or naked anchor texts within a press release, then no, it's probably not dead.
If you're publishing quality and newsworthy content that people would want to read, then no, it's not dead.
If you're publishing quality and newsworthy content using branded anchor texts, then no, it's definitely not dead.
If you're publishing bullshit press releases that nobody will read using commercial anchors, then you're going to have a bad time.

Get it yet? Do you understand? I bloody hope so! Took me around 2 minutes to explain that to you, which apparently for some needs a rocket science degree... Geez.

The press release is not dead. According to Alexa.com, traffic of prweb.com and other press release sites still high.

The press releases still can be used for SEO off page purpose and also direct traffic.

If you know how to use the press release properly and get ROI, the paid version is not wasting money.

if you do it right its well worth the effort and money for example press release = news, it could be launch of a new product, flash sale on the product, celebrity endorsement , about a v2 of the existing product and most important part you need to mention details like who spoke at this gathering ? what's his relation to the product and the site ? where was the conference held? there are very few people who follow these details. if done right it does have the potential to go viral.

Press Release is my favorite in boosting a new blog's ranking, usually with 4 links from good PR sites it will move several pages up almost instantly.

Quality Press Releases are still valuable, but use a reputable distribution partner like PRWEB. Don't do the spammy PR sites, those won't help. Having used PRs to boost SEO I can tell you that their effect has been greatly diminished since the past year or two. Before it could catapult a term to page one, now it will really only help get your term indexed or a slight boost.

    Dear,
Firstly, the magic of press release has not over yet. Secondly, the press releases should be posted for well authority sites and in press releases the articles spinning technique should not be done.

Press releases are great if they're used the way they're intended to, and your story gets picked up by news media & other sites organically link to yours. As others said, if you're just using them to get links from random press release sites, then yeah, don't expect too much ROI.

PR used to be GREAT for increasing rankings, now it doesn't work on G - at all. Like others mentioned if you go with a premium PR and don't submit to free crappy sites you can gain good traffic from the release. The good paid sites make the links NF to appease the big G, so it won't hurt your organic rankings.

As a side note, you can get a decent PR to rank well ;^)
