Is outbound linking still a thing in SEO 2024?

I am used to link to a few high ranking sites (e.g. ncbi. pubmed, etc.) from every informative aricle/page i post on the site.

However, I don't use keyword in the link text, but rather something like 'this study' or 'an experiment run....'. They are all do-follow links though.

Is this something that still makes sense OR it's just pointless in this era of SEO?

I always link out to high authority non competitive sites. I treat articles like academic papers so the outbound links are placed near the bottom of my page.

Internal links are all entity based

Linking out has never been a thing. It was only there to improve user experience.
It's a myth that if you link out to "authority websites" you kinda associate yourself with them.

Just look at wikipedia... it's full of false information but those linking out to it made it kinda an authority.

its as prominent today as it always was and still serves a purpose
