Is my website being attacked by bot traffic?

Hello everyone, suddenly, I’m seeing a huge spike in traffic in GA4 as shown in the screenshot, coming from many different countries.
My average daily traffic is usually between 40 and 80 users, but today it suddenly jumped to around 2,000 organic visits. In GA4, the traffic source is showing as organic traffic.

I’m trying to understand whether this could be:

• scraping bots
• CTR manipulation
• fake organic traffic
• or something else

Note: I recently started a manual Facebook campaign by posting in multiple groups, so I’m not sure if this spike could be related to that.

You can usually tell by checking a few things. If the traffic is real organic traffic, you should also see a spike in Google Search Console clicks and impressions at the same time. If GA4 shows a big increase but Search Console doesn’t, that’s often a sign the traffic isn’t genuine.

Also, since you mentioned Facebook posting traffic from Facebook groups normally shows as referral, social, or sometimes direct, not organic. So if GA4 is labeling it as organic, that’s a bit suspicious.

Another thing to check is engagement metrics. If the engagement rate is very low (around 0–10%), average engagement time is about 1 second, or bounce rate is close to 100%, it usually indicates bot or fake traffic rather than real users.

2000 organic out of nowhere is usually bots not real users. Check bounce rate and session time if near zero then fake.

Also look at landing pages and keywords cause real traffic has pattern.

The Facebook groups posting is almost certainly what caused this. When you post in multiple active groups, people share it further, other people share that, and it cascades. GA4 often misattributes social dark traffic as organic when it can't identify the source properly — this is a known GA4 issue.
The geographic spread you're seeing on the map actually supports this. Real viral social traffic comes from multiple countries simultaneously because Facebook groups have international members. Bot traffic usually clusters in specific regions.
To confirm — check your bounce rate and session duration on those 2000 visits. If people are spending time on the site, clicking around, that's real traffic. If it's 95% bounce rate with 0-2 second sessions, that's bots or very low quality traffic.
Also check server logs, not just GA4. GA4 misses a lot and sometimes inflates numbers from tracking glitches. If the server logs show similar numbers to GA4 then the traffic is real.
Most likely scenario — your Facebook posts hit some active groups and it snowballed. Enjoy it, just don't expect it to repeat consistently.

Thanks for your help! I’ve checked the related metrics and nothing looks unusual so far.

Bounce rate: 1.8%
Average engagement rate: 98.2%
Average engagement time: 49s

The last thing I need to verify is the traffic in Search Console, but since there’s a 2-day delay, I have to wait.

Thanks for helping! The conclusion so far is that the GA4 metrics show no anomalies. The traffic quality indicators look normal, so the last thing left to do is wait for the Search Console data to confirm whether the organic spike is real

Something similar happened to my website last year, all of a sudden i had a high spike in direct traffic from china/singapore, after the latest google update it went downhill, but i still get some from time to time, those users were mostly looking at categories and the author page.

It's likely ain't bot traffic. I can tell that from this heatmap because if it were, you would be seeing a lot more hits from Europe, Singapore and North America.

Thats where most bot IP ranges are from.
You seem to have minimal traffic from those regions other than singapore.

Clearly this has to do with your campaign. Was your campaign/posting in groups that would belong to the African regions?

This would mean either actual humans or scraping bots.

They stay around on a page longer and click whatever they see.

Wait for the Google console results but I think it's real.

A sudden spike like that is almost always bot or fake traffic check GA4 engagement and Search Console to confirm if it’s real.

Hello guys! It’s now clear that this was 100% a bot attack because Search Console did not detect the spike, and everything there looks normal, including the queries. So the best way to confirm whether this kind of traffic spike is fake is by checking Search Console data alongside GA4, since fake traffic often appears in Analytics but not in Search Console.

Good catch. GA4 is notorious for picking up ghost referral and bot traffic that GSC completely ignores. I've had similar spikes before and it’s usually just scrapers or automated tools testing for vulnerabilities or scraping content for AI training. If it's not showing up in GSC, it’s definitely not "real" organic traffic from the search engine. Just block those IPs or user agents if you see them hitting you hard enough to affect server load.

Whoa that's a big jump! I'd be excited but also suspicious honestly
From what I've read, a few quick things to check in GA4

Look at bounce rate and session duration for that traffic - bots usually land and leave in under 2 seconds with 0 engagement

• Check which countries the traffic is coming from - if it's random countries you'd never expect for your niche that's a red flag
• Look at pages per session - real users usually visit more than one page

i do have the same problem.
Initially it was Windows direct traffic from Singapore/China.

Now they have upgraded and use more countryes. So it's hard to tell what is real and what is bot scraping. The thing is they show in analytics but they have poor metrics.
I can tell that they are bots just because they never visit the same page again.
And having over 5.2M articles, i get a lot of them.
I've opened a ticket on cloudflare, but since i am not on a paid plan, going with cloudflare is useless.

Waiting on G Boss to make a fix for them.

That spike is definitely looking like bot traffic or referral spam since those numbers are way too high for just a few Facebook posts. You should check your engagement rate and session duration in GA4 because if those metrics are near zero, you’ve definitely been hit by bots
