I've been toying with the idea of running my own digg style site for sometime now but I'm still unsure if it would be financially viable, and by that I mean, I'm not sure if it would turn over any money using ads. Has anyone else had any experience running these types sites that could offer some insights?

In my opinion running those kind of sites as own private networks is the only solution, run a niche website to bost your money site on a dropped PR.
Or you can always setup a pligg to see what other people are promoting :).

it would get a lot of hits, but mostly from SEO bots creating backlinks, I guess it would take a lot to manage to stop all the spam.

That's what has stopped me from going ahead with it right now, although I know regardless of what type of social site I set up I would probably be facing the same problem.

Do you have plans to make the site valuable for the users pf the site or do you want to use it as a link farm?

I wouldnt go for pligg sites, there are plenty other more profitable options.
