Is it true backlinks are useless without them getting pinged?

I don't ping my backlinks but if all your backlinks are crap, like nothing but forum profiles, it won't hurt. Google probably won't index most forum profiles anyway because they add no value to their index but at least you know they crawled it.

It helps but it is not a thumb rule.

If you do that, you'll have to ping (2) your pings (1) and then ping (3) the pings(2) [repeat this sequence infiniteny]
You'll never stop to ping it's the end for you ^^

Pingin is highly overrated and is promoted to increase the price of the actuall backlinks.
EDU links dont need pinging at all and the link juice you get remain superior nonetheless!

In my experince, if u have good backlink-quality backlink - MUST To Be PINGED, cause it will help to be indexed and know by google and other search engine.. I using research about this with my skill and i write post and tag just 2 word "SEO HOLIC" u can be amazing that my blog is no 1 at google

I heard that backlinks are not useful if they aren't indexed by the search engines.

scrapebox blasts with thousands of auto approves. The more you blast the better chance to getting them indexed. Pinging does shit for me

If the search engines don't know a link is there, they can't credit your site in the SERPS.
If your ping tool submits your site to googles blog search, it almost guarantees that Google will crawl your links.
As for indexing vs crawling for SERP benefit, I'm not exactly sure, I'm still testing that out, and to be honest, indexing isn't everything that moves rank.

I usually ping the high value links and just let google find the others. Yes pinging is a way for the spider to identfythe link, but whether or not its indexed is upto google.

if they are your own backlinks, it easy to ping them (if they are not already in googles index) use pingomatic.com (free)

Google will anyway index your back links... Only thing is that pings will expedite the process.
