Is it too late to learn coding now?

All the young people, highschool students, college students in my area say that it is too late to learn coding and programming now because AI is getting better and better, and it will be able to do all the job soon. So they are afraid to get into this journey because by the time they become an expert, AI will be like a God-Coder.

I try to motivate them and tell them do not worry, it is not going to die, it is just changing like usual, you just need to adapt, and do not give up on your dreams. But I am really not so sure. No one can know the future for sure.

Don't tell them anything. Work on yourself. If you want to learn to code, do it. Don't let anyone stop you. AI is still a couple of years behind its full potential. Plus, you will need some coding knowledge to use the solutions generated by an AI.
 
It's never too late. You are so lucky in fact coz GPT can code for you.
 
No, it is never too late to learn coding. In today's job market, it might be useful in many areas, not just in the IT industry. If you work hard and practice, you can learn to code professionally and open up a lot of doors for yourself.
 
Programming is 90% putting the right thing in the right place inside your ide. You always need a programmer, like a movie needs a director. No director no movie. No programmer, no software.
 
AI cannot replicate the creativity and human touch that a skilled programmer can bring to the table. And technology is constantly evolving, more problems will come that the programmed AI wouldn’t be able to solve at the moment unless it’s upgraded.

So it’s better to start now than later
 
No it's not too late.
A good coder will always be needed.

While AI does a decent job with coding, you still need to instruct it, and it won't always give you perfect code, so you'll need to understand what you were given and how to implement/debug it.
 
Lets put it this way. There will always be people who need to make the machines that replace jobs. You can get left behind if you are not ahead of the curb.
 
Depends on when you think it will be good enough to give it access to slack/github/codebase and let it do the job also you have to take in account that AGI will probably be a thing in that moment.

I don't think that we will reach that with ChatGPT but it's a starting point.
 
Coders become super skilled clients with textual and now with copilot x and verbal inputs. AI will have access on hosting, and we will just give inputs to upload, change files with instructions and I am not sure how IT industry will look for 10 years....

It is still a valuable skill to learn.

But yes, most likely low/mid tier engineers will get replaced.

No, it's not too late to learn coding! Coding is a valuable skill that is in high demand and there is no age limit for learning it. In fact, many successful programmers and developers started their careers later in life.
 
One of my closest friends was 38 when he started learning coding. He was working as shift manager at a local cafe making minimum wage and was sick of his life. He signed up for an online college and now he is Full Stack .NET Developer working for that college.

It's never too late and will always have job opportunities, even with AI.
 
Like with anything, just go for it. Even if you don't make anything out of it professionally, there are still situations where it could benefit you, like making a website for non-profit that you support, automating something annoying or making a html5 game for a tabletop from your childhood.

It is NOT too late to learn anything good in life. It is only TOO LATE for someone that is DEAD. As long as you are alive, nothing is too late!
