May i know why youtube need phone number to be verified to enable custom thumbnail?

is it safe to verify on youtube for a small channel?

does youtube use our phone number to track us and sell our phone number to third party vendor?

i dont feel safe verifying before getting eligible for youtube monetization.

YouTube aka Google basically asks phone number verification to keep away the spam. They don't need to sell the data to any third party, they themselves are monetising you already.
