Is it possible to swap IG handles?

I'm considering buying an IG account with a larger following and changing the username to a username I already own.

In order to prevent the username I wanted from being taken, I've named another account I own already with the username.

Is it now possible for me to take the account I already own, change the username, save it, then go to my newly purchased IG account and rename it with the other username?

I'm not sure if Instagram will say that the username is already taken even if I change the name slightly on my account.

I think it's possible. I know for sure if you delete forever an account on IG (or IG ban you), you can't use that username anymore even if there isn't an account with that username. Just try it and let us know

Yes. That should be works. Just make sure you swap it immedietly in case somebody use that username before you apply to your main account

So how would I swap if I can’t delete the account? Just deactivate it and I can take the username?

All you have to do is change the usernames. Example - Account 1 is the account with the username you want and account 2 is the newly purchased account. Sign into both accounts on your phone. Go to account 1 and change the username to whatever, save it. Immediately switch to new account change username to the name you wanted and save. Viola. I've done it multiple times, works easily.

No need to delete any accounts or deactivate.

An even faster way to do this is if you use your computer and mobile at the same time.
Log in to one account on the computer, the other one on the phone. Pre Change the username on both accounts, then confirm it first on the account that currently has the username you like to swap and immediately confirm that name on the other account.
The less time in between the change the less risk that the name gets picked up by a bot if it's a good username.
