Hey guys!

Just trying to do smth good and very fast & easy for a start and wondering if I would sell a T-shirts with designs from google on them. Like downloading vectors from free sites and put those designs on them. This would be illegal or not? What kind of attribution it should be that I would be safer? Any other precautions?

It depends on what the copyright is for the individual images. You can filter Google Images to find images labeled for commercial reuse (although the filter is not perfect).

If they specifically say free for COMMERCIAL and personal use, I would like to think that you would be fine. I’m no paralegal however. Wouldn’t be too expensive to hire a freelancer for unique designs, one of my guys does amazing work from scratch for around $15 an hour.

Use images that aren't copyrighted and you'll be fine.

At first use them which are totally free for personal and commercial.

Thank you guys for all the thoughts for this. I assume it would be too hard to catch everyone online, even if copyright attribution prohibits to sell their designs printed somewhere.

That is true. But I’m sure if one day you’re doing 6 figures off of the designs, have people counting on you, etc. and you get a court order in the mail you would wish you could go back in time and just pay someone $100 to do the designs instead of cutting corners and having to pay hundreds of thousands in attorney fees, court fees and compensation to the company because of it.

DO NOT ASSUME YOU WILL NOT BE FOUND OUT.

That is a little advice that will be invaluable to you. If you make any half decent money doing this then someone will come knocking on your door looking for a payout and the payout will be way more than you earned off the design.

Depends on the copyright and licence restrictions, but if it's brand name / product, then steer clear.

Last thing you want is to be generating thousands a month then get a legal letter where they are going to demand a huge % of your income.

Get a designer and create your own designs, is the best option.

The big thing is that it likely won't be just a huge % of your income, it is more likely to be the entire income plus a huge % or even a multiple.

Yes guys I get your points but at the given moment there is no way I could afford proper designer for my works. It's just to blast off and to start smth normal. I don't want to make 6 figures out of stolen designs, but I can see a hole here to get few bucks for starters.

In that case you should maybe look for some stock images that are free of restrictions. There are sites that offer images and photos under a royalty free basis. You are still not guaranteed to be safe with these as you never truly know the origin of the images but you are far less likely to get into trouble than just indiscriminately taking images from Google.

You could do what you are proposing, I just wouldn't advise using Google as your source for images, it is risky.

With all due respect that is terrible advice. If someone is hell bent on going down the route of using others' work to base their business it should be a stop gap to getting a bit of cash to make it in a more legit / safe manner so it cannot be taken away at any time.

I agree with Jim, worst advice I’ve seen all day.

If you set out to make a quick buck, you might make it, but you’ll soon find yourself in the same dilemma over and over again until you build something sustainable long term.
