Is it illegal to use fake data when registering a domain?

Hi, 6 years ago I registered a domain with fake data (not stolen data, I simply used fake data, the person I used doesn't exist) for a local domain that I bought at auction to use as PBN.

Recently I received an email from the registry asking me to send a copy of my ID or they will take back the domain. Of copurse I won't commit fraud by sending fake ID of course, so I accept to lose this domain, but I'm unsure if having used a fake person that doesn't exist could lead to other consequences other than losing the domain? And why they want the ID only 6 years later? Is it so weird

These are the risks when you use fake IDs for anything. If you cannot produce original documents, you could be in a bad position.
 
You can move the domain to a different provider then you don't lose it.
I usually never give my real information, and in over 15 years I never had any issues or asked to provide KYC

I can't, they blocked the domain

how do you build your pbns otherwise?
 
Its unlikely (although there are exceptions) that the email you received is legit.
Is the email coming from your domain registar or ICANN ?

If is from your registar transfer the domain and you are set.

The worse case scenario .. could be to get your domain suspended.
I guess you are not doing anything sneaky with that domain :D

But seriously be aware of phishing emails like this one.. over 60% of the registered domains are with fake info so can say that there is high chance to be fraud email.

You can contact your register and ask them "Do you have emailed me recently for anything related to my domain XXXX.YYY?"

If you like your registar and you are not doing anything shady.. just provide your details (after confirming that the request is legit).

I've had a few domains suspended for not providing valid info. There wasn't even anything shady on them I just didn't want my address all over the internet. Not really as much of an issue now with GDPR.
 
Does it let you update the domain details? If so you can change details and provide your real ID.

Losing the domain is not a problem. I just hope o don't have to deal with legal consequences

I don't have anything shady either, and it's not even monetized
 
You probably won't get into any legal issue unless you try to send fake ID again.
Just pretend you didn't read that email and consider it lost.

When ID expire some companies ask for new one some doesn't it's not triggered by
any detection.

The same reason I ditched stealth PayPal usage. You can send fake doc however you want but PayPal would always someday prove themselves a bitch, lock funds and all the hassles. Complete bs a sane human doesn't wanna deal with.

I've never gone down the stealth PP route either.

I never sent any fake ID, the ID was never required by the provider.
I just fullfilled the fields of the registration with fake data
 
I guess its time to prepare for jail




im joking. Nothing is going to happen... Its just like registering a fake mail. Not legal, but its not to much of a crime. domain will be banned maybe...

Only reason to worry is if the person in the details makes a claim. But other than that, the hosting company wont care. Thats costing money. The employee need to be paid and noone will work for no reason.
 
You won't face any legal issues mate at most they block the domain

Small advices, never use that browser you log in to the domain provider to do anything, never use that email again,
Use a different domain registrar from now on, if there are any legal issue with that domain (beside ID one) there is maybe bigger case you have
Use Bitcoin payment and VM (If your PC/Lap can handle it) & foreign proxies, and prepare (in some cases) fake ID/documents
Me myself I never had ID issue with most providers only with `NAME.COM`
 
Using fake information must is an offense against the domain policy.

You will lose the Domain Unless you send any fake identity No Legal Issues. Just pretend you have not gotten any email.

BTW, @gm90 who is the Domain Registrar?
