Is IM getting harder nowadays?

yeah its getting tougher and tougher, and the main thing is that its different from other offline business and no one knows the real path that x amount of hard work in a particular direction will surely make you x amount of money, it's totally uncertain, you won't be sure of the end result. especially in case of ranking in google, no matter how much money you put on table.

IM is general is getting much more difficult.

The problem is now there's an entire industry dedicated to making people get into IM. Youtubers sellers courses etc. The means that for every idea you have the chances are 10 more people are working on that idea right now.

SEO is absolutely more difficult. A few years ago I could literally buy some garbage fiverr links and use spun articles and rank for low comp keywords and make money. My main business, which is entirely built on SEO traffic and word of mouth is still struggling despite investing thousands into content and links. The sites at the top of SERPs most "white hat" SEOs would say it would be impossible for them to rank. There's just no certain way to get results and build a business on SEO for me at the moment.

Few things I have noticed is a common factor in recent successful business and what I have considered:

- Having a face of your business. A great example is the UK based gym/supplement supplier Mental Hamster owned by Aarron Lambo. His controversial videos and helpful content appealed massively to the masses, especially the working class people in the UK. They are turning over massive amounts of money with products that frankly have been around for ages, but his audience like and trust his products.

- For Ecommerce sites, stop wasting all your money trying to rank for a few KWs, which might have a combined monthly search of a few K. The amount of links and content you'll need to purchase could be used to pay influencers, test FB/Insta ads, google ads etc. The main SEO priority is ranking for your brand name, this is of absolute important. So choose a brand name that's unique instead of chasing expired domains and trying to wrap an old domain name around a new brand. You can always use expired domains on seperate "Review" type sites, this seems to work okay still, but Google will come down on expired domains eventually as they are being abused massively.

- Focus on building a brand. Many new and IMers seem to keep trying the usual method of making a quick basic ecommerce store, throwing a tonne of dropship/POD products and trying to just push ads with generic non branded products. Use this method to test the market, but focus on getting white label/own brand products once you find something that works.

- Videos. This may seem like a no brainer, but people LOVE videos. Whether its an explainer, product unboxing, 360 pan view of a product etc they will always build confidence in your product. DON'T just throw the usual 3D renders up with your label on with nothing else. Yes crap pictures work if your product is highly desired, but why handicap yourself.

- Don't waste your energy on tasks which drain you
If you're building a clothing business, and you love designing clothes and posting on social media but hate writing SEO articles, hire a writer to do the articles, as trying to do things you hate will divert energy from things which could benefit your business

- Don't be a shady dropshipper
We've all seen the surge of these sites built in an hour, with aliexpress pictures, grammar mistakes and stock photos. They have no business information, registration, contact information etc. Work as a legit company and don't try and hide who you are, unless you're doing something illegal I guess.

I see these days every online business has become very competitive because lots of people are entering in this online market and want to earn money from home or office space. Especially I do know about website developing, SEO, web hosting, Digital marketing etc..
But the market also becomes too wide then earlier.

This is true and why in the future I'm focusing on PPC. Generally PPC you can often start to gauge the ROI once you have enough customer data. A perfect example is a multi million euro fintech startup my sister worked for, they spend a fortune on buying links through top sites like Forbes, Business insider and having in house writers yet they don't even rank for the top keywords for their niche.

IM is no longer a niche you can enter without capital, knowledge and get stable income.
I remember back in time (around 2011) when i was selling adwords vouchers. Clever guy with nearly 0 experience and $100-200 days with actually zero investment.

All niches you mentioned OP can bring money. Seo, social sites automation, anything - but it requires skills and experience.

I don't have a problem with getting more competitors. Only 1% of the people who are buying courses etc. are actually taking action. The other thing with them is many of them need someone to spoonfeed them, thats why they buy courses in the first place. IM/Entrepreneurship is about finding ways, methods to earn money, to learn in the process, to make mistakes and learn from experiences. People who are buying a course for $500 and expect to master something just failed already.

By myself I don't rely on Google and PayPal alone. It would be a big mistake. But if you set up two ecommerce stores (dropshipping if you want) and put CC and bank transfer to the first and CC and Paypal to the second, you will be a much better Conversation rate for the second store. I tested it. First I was wondering why my shop converted so badly, then I added Paypal and the CR just became 5x. So many average customers/people will skip the shop/checkout if they see paypal is not available. Its insane. Try it yourself. Therefore Paypal is a must have (unfortunately (!)).

Regulations are just getting super strict...I don't see how it will get better. It will only get worse in our perspective. More regulations, more banning, more censorship, more limits etc.

Yes, it is much tougher and part of the problem is people sharing methods on here that are exact. Someone posted an idiot's step by step guide for something I was doing and it was saturated within a week.

Might be the minority in this thread, but I'd have to disagree.

I think it's getting easier because people think it is getting harder.

Far fewer people take serious action than you think. Most either never actually start or quit after the first bump in the road.

nowdays without investment you can't make anything... many of us remember times of sharecash and fileice, when you just upload video on youtube and it would rank instantly, add dozen of likes for it to look as real thing and forget about it and you would earn good money... nowdays it's impossible because google and youtube have become goofs, we can adopt to their rules and continue doing this... but after many years, I'm thinking about learning Java and have some knowledge as a backup because things won't get easier I'm afraid...

We can argue on and on about this but the truth is the opportunity on the web, in general, and SERPs, in particular, is constantly shrinking. Affiliate marketing is getting hella saturated, dropshipping is done for those without the right payment processor, supplier, etc.

The online world is more and more resembling the offline world with most niches being dominated by a few gaints. Ranking for medium/short tail kws is getting tougher and even the long tails are being copped by the giants left, right and center.

Truth be told, the days of "easy" Internet money are gone for good.

Been a member at bhw now for almost 11 years. In the early days I made a lot of money and did wise stuff with this money, but technology moves on and can leave people behind. My opinion (and perhaps mine only) is the reason why it gets more difficult. Getting stuck in a rut, not moving the times, thinking something will last forever etc etc.

I just had this random thought about how I was doing IM back in 2013-2017. Since then lots of things happened:

- Google changed their algorithm heavily. It constantly updates itself now. They are releasing countless updates (just within the last four months they had at least three major updates according to my experiences) without actually telling what they changed or whats going on. Sometimes they don't even officially say the made updates. This makes it very hard for people to rely on SEO.

- Automation got much harder. Instagram and Jarvee is a good example. Also for Facebook and Twitter it got much harder.

- Facebook: You remember the time when we had Facebook pages with 100k real fans and you could actually earn a lot from it and drive lots of traffic your sites/videos? This time is long gone. They totally fucked up their algo. Nobody is talking about it anymore. Its not worth it to grow FB pages anymore. Few years ago you could earn some serious cash.

- Shopify/Dropshipping is not only saturated, but Paypal recently declared "war" on dropshipping. So many people are complaining about it on YouTube. Problem: From my experience 70% of the customers are using Paypal to pay. No Paypal = much less sales

- SMM Panels: Damn, it became so hard to find a working SMM panel. Last year and the years before everything worked perfectly fine. Now its the opposite.

- PayPal: It seems like Paypal is making it very very hard to make business with them. After they successfully got rid of SMM panels, they are now going after dropshippers. What next? So many people rely on Paypal and they are not giving any fuck to simply limit any account they want.

- YouTube: I remember back then in 2012. I made a YouTube channel, uploaded some original videos and monetized them directly. Just connected my Adsense account and thats it. I could earn money instantly. Now they regulate the shit out of YT by annoying requirements and a very strict policy. Also they are going after kids channels etc. now. Its crazy.

What is the point of this thread?

I am wondering: Did we already reach the tipping point? Are things going to be even worse in the future? Like more regulations, stricter policies, easier to get the account banned, unpredictable serps etc.?

What is your opinion on this?

A lot has changed you're right. Those initial updates with pandas and seeing things drop....just like that, was a bummer and wake up call, could only do so much. Needed to adapt.

I assume paypal is not thrilled since its a just an influx of money pouring in and out of your accounts if your margins are weak.

I have been in IM for the past 6 years. Sadly I have wasted most of my time. Never knew these possibilities of making money in my old days. I think most blackhat methods are getting patched. If you only look for easy money, things will get harder. Its better to look for grey and white hat methods because those will only survive in the long run.

10 years ago this same topic was posted. People complained it was getting harder, more competition ect. I've been around but not active in internet marketing for the past 10-15 years and this has always been something people have said. But there will always be a way forward, in 10 years from now people will reminisce about the good old amazon affiliate days, and when you didnt have to "invest" 5K plus to rank or something like that, whatever the new problem will be then.

IM is a very broad word to measure, but no, there are multitude of opportunities in IM, some are hard, some are not. Its Its just the number of people trying to earn online has multiplied and thus there is a lot of complaining

As for SEO, this a different story. Seo hasn't got harder, it got more expensive. Now, you need a good capital to make it in SEO. But from technical side, I believe its now easier. More material, google got bored of their wipe out algorithms, and with a simple search you can get all the information you need about SEO.

The competition now is about who got deeper pocket to win the first positions.

On the other side, competition means there is money out there, people are coming to IM because there is money to be made, and year after year more are doing it,
the problem is the majority of them couldn't keep the amount they were earning the first day when they started because of every business change by time and only a few adapt and compete ...

Spilt Milk, Investors love when things get hard. Shouldn't we?

If you see a problem in a system thers money to be made in some way. :P

I've been in IM since 2011 when you could earn $100-$200+ a day off sniper sites (no longer works) or run an ad campaign on 7 search (now defunct) and profit 20%. It was competitive back then too, but has only gotten harder and will only get harder. IM is tough and about 99.9% fail. I honestly think only about 1 out of 1,000 internet marketers earn a living doing it. Anyone with a computer and internet connection can do IM anywhere in the world. It seems like the best way to do IM now is to sell a course or digital product like a webinar or ebook.
