An SSL certificate is not something that is "mandatory" but it is "recommended" for it "might" help your website rank better and faster on search engines.
SSL cert sellers do not guarantee that it "will" but it "might" be of help in terms of ranking.

I have used SSL certificate thinking it will improve my ranking but it has zero impact on ranking according to me. Yes it looks good, like green https:// thing.

I have seen a 2/3 spots increase after switching to https, but as usual it can comes from a lot of different factor.
Note that SSL certificate are now free with Let's Encrypt, so I wouldn't be surprised if in the middle or long term, non https website would get a slight penalty.

SSL certificate is only important for sites where there is a payment page or something where personal information is shared.
And it doesn't have any effect on rankings for blogs and other small platforms.

    Rule of thumb -

If the top 20 are using https then do the same!

People forget that google is a search engine within a search engine. They look for flags within a niche, simply fit in and do better

If everything else is equal, and you're using https and your competitor is not, you'll be above them.

But in the mix of ranking signals, https is a very weak one. Google never acknowledges a strong signal, ever. If they said https ranks you, it means they want you to use https, but it probably means less than 1% in the whole formula.

First of all, SSL certs and https won't secure your site or as you called it web from virus / malware / hackers.
The connection between the visitor / customer and your site is encrypted to allow secure data transfer / comunication and avoid for example Man-in-the-Middle attacks.

I switch our shops to full https, so every request to the sites uses it.
We had some rank gains with some of our shops, with some not.

I would take it from another view than the ranking, it's cutsomer security.
Most competitors are only using https on their customer / checkout / payment pages so that's a selling point for us.
In the last month we had multiple customers that send requests about how we handle their user data, secure connections etc.
My co worker forgot a couple month ago to renew a certificate, and we had almost instantly customers calling about the invalid certificate,
and when we fix this, cause they wouldn't order on a page with a broken cert.

Now with Let's encrypt in place there is no reason not to use https. Most hosts offer those certs with auto renewel, under plesk you have a set and forget plugin for LE.
Enabling https on a page will mostly take max. 5 minutes.

Also there are several third party plugins for shops / pages that require SSL (eg Amazon Payments / Login with Amazon).

I think it's one piece of the puzzle when you play in the net.

That`s highly unlikely that you would see a ranking improvement due to switching to https. Also, https does not stop attackers from hacking a website or web server in any way. In case you have to transfer personal id/transaction or other sensitive data - https is a must for sure, but I`d say there`s no point in moving to it for no crucial reason. In some cases you may theoretically benefit from the referral traffic looking as direct (since the referral data is being dropped while going from https to http), however, you may face some issues in case you take part in any affiliate program for instance, and have to send referral traffic to an http website.

there's no significant ranking improvement of https over http but i had done a site speed test with both http and https. surprisingly https page load is faster than http, this could be the reason i would prefer to switch to https and as now its free and why not

99% of websites don't need any SSL.
You need SSL only when you process private data of customers. If you're a forum/blog/article website you don't need HTTPS at all. In that case it is nothing but resource waste because it takes CPU time on both server and client side and makes network packages bigger.

Lol @ people expect it. You appear like some one who haven't any interaction with real people for a long time. I bet 95% of normal users barely know what HTTPS is and few of them actually give a damn about it. Well maybe when it comes down to payment processing and stuff like that, still not many would care.

In my opinion, nowadays many websites use HTTPS and some people preach that everyone should use it and that it is expected however I find it to be very wrong.
