I think 90% of the domains out there, those that have been around for more than 5 years straight, are all .coms , thus, if you are building a brand out of a domain, go for the .com to avoid confusing your visitors - yes, most of the time we refer to a website by the .com only.
But if you are solely channeling/funneling traffic from the search engine, then it is not necessarily need to be a .com - an emd would be good, a .com emd would be a bonus, but the real ranking power now lies within country level TLD EMD.
