We know these well known TLDs ".com", ".net", ".org", etc.

But are is this so important to have your website attached to them ?

Most are already taken.

So, in 2018, in general, is it better to do:

1/ "[keyword-keyword (long)]" . [popular TLD] (example : buy a plane . com)

Or :

2/ "[short keyword] . [unpopular TLD]" ( example : plane . it)

Or it doesn't matter ?

I feel most people will be more confident to click on a popular TLD.

But will the difference be so huge ?

With a less popular TLD, and a shorter keyword, the URL of the website could also be much easier for the customer to remember.

What are your thoughts about this ?

Yes .com give more influence to visitors and brand. However, if .com is not maintenance properly it being a garbage.

Personally when buy a domain I will look up for .com and .org first. I don't know why, I never like .net by the way. Then when all top TLD taken I will go to generic one.

Lately, domain ranked well or not it depend on maintenance process. I have hundreds generic tld ranked well on google (hard competition keywords) although the competitors have .com

So, it .com or not if you take care it just like your child, it will pay back.

It is 2018, we are past the phase that .com is a must. It is no longer a compulsion to have a Popular TLD for SEO purpose.

If your Domain name is catchy, unique and easy to remember, people will land on it. If your site solves major queries of customers, you are good to go.

Like @MSRP said, you need to take good care of it. With strategic updates, rich content, and proper link building, you can outrank a .com site.

I've always tried to get .com's first. I certainly own custom TDLs though, I'd say it's a wash, it really depends on your target audience.

Social media LOVES catchy "vanity" domains(or hacked names if you prefer).

And such.

in general .com builds trust since most websties you use have .com adn makes it sound more legit. it all depends .io is really popular in games and software related lately.
dont know much about ranking but giving my noobie pleb pov

Some ideas such as justpaste .it are good and you get those domains. But trust me! .com is the best :)

for an online store? YES!¡ Answer me this...Would you buy on a online store with a weird extention? If you´re building a blig type of website get a domain with an extention related to your main keyword as other had advice here.

It's not necessary to have them, but .com, .net, .org just lend legitimacy.
If you're not going for a serious business, and its something in game/tech related there's no need for it. (people love .io)
Work hard on it and it'll outrank a .com anyday

Yes, If you want to set up your online business worldwide, you need .com URL for your business. And if you only want to target local audience then you can use the URL with some other extension according to the location you live in.

I tried to index 2 websites. one with .com one with .space
.com domain indexed in few hours while .space took days to index. So yeah, .com is better

.com is legacy and there is no problem if you do no use .com . Actually people are habituated in .com and they feels so great( the visitors ) .

Exactly, snag.gy, bit.ly etc are so easy to remember and you can make even catchier ones. Good luck! :)

.com gives a greater air of legitimacy to your business. I'd say a ".com" is still a must have.
