today while asking ai some questions i realized that whenever i want to look something up or ask something, the first place that comes to my mind is not google anymore but ai. how long have you stopped using google, or how much has your google usage dropped?

for finding general information, like history, or facts about the earth or solar system, or a basic question about an animal, my google usage has basically dropped to zero. However this doesn't really matter to google because that's not how they make their money. In fact they probably like that we don't waste their resources on basic questions anymore.

In terms of searching for a business, shopping, booking stuff/making reservations, or discussions and articles written by real humans, I still use Google exclusively.
 
I’ve gotten sick and tired of Google pushing sanitized corporate BS on the top page and now with Gemini it’s basically unusable. That thing is always piping in a patronizing way and half the time it’s off topic, gaslighting, or just plain wrong. It feels shallow and sanitized.

These days I use Copilot and GPT5 pro a lot, especially for work. I still fall back on Google for local stuff like what time a store closes or finding a plumber near me, mostly out of habit since we’ve all been conditioned for years.

I am mostly on Mojeek now, it has far less censorship and it gives me an opportunity to discover new sites without having ads or corporate nonsense shoved down my throat. Google went from being a discovery tool to being a billboard for big brother. I don’t like or trust it but I still gotta play the game and rank on it :D
 
Have you ever heard of scale Google operates at? They're referred to as having search monopoly.
Your personal experience doesn't reflect experience of every other inhabitant of the planet.
Google and YouTube together have so much traffic and data it's beyond words.
 
While Google does operate at a huge scale, I'm sure they're concerned about AI being the new "source of truth".
I think where Google will excel most is when multiple options are needing to be quickly provided and the user isn't quite sure what they're looking for.

A good example of this could be recipes - if you ask AI for a recipe, you'll probably get a single recipe and no options. However, with Google search, if you click on a recipe you don't like, you can quickly go back to google search and find another one that you do like.

I think coding is one item that a lot of people focus on AI for - i'd be curious to see the traffic stats for stackoverflow lately given the surge in popularity of AI coding tools like claude code and cursor
 
I'm just using Google search for "site:" queries but not for information. It's pointless to dig through various pages to search for information myself whereas AI has done the job already and gives a pretty precise answer, links included.
 
Wait till these chatbots start optimizing for ads as well, right now they are in user acquisition mode and have to compete for users.
 
Traffic to websites through google search must have definitely dropped, going by the search behavior of most people now. The answers are mostly in the AI response section. Sites that can get themselves cited in the AI response are the ones going to gain big from the new paradigm shift.

Personally, I don’t see the point anymore in having to search through multiple pages just to get an answer

I can’t say exactly how long it’s been but since I started using ChatGPT I prefer getting quick and direct answers from it over Google

2-3 years, I don't remember. But I definitely didn't replace it with AI (I can't stand that crap)... I'm just using whichever SE I feel like using at that moment (nowadays I'm into DDG, a few weeks ago I used Bing, before that I used Ecosia and Startpage, etc)

But regardless of which SE I'm using, a lot of times I'm adding "reddit" at the end of the search query... or I outright go to reddit and look stuff up...

Stackoverflow is probably the most affected.
 
Okay, you are not searching on Google, you are outsorcing this process and an AI will search on Google for you and create a report of the results
 
For informational questions, AI is definitely better. I generally like to use LLM when I need to solve a new problem. I just send screenshots, and I get detailed instructions on where to click and what to do. It's very convenient.

On the other hand, I don't think there's anything to worry about with ecom yet. I only make purchases and order services on Google.
 
I think google is here not going anywhere but AI is drastically taking swing
 
Google usage has dropped a lot, but sometimes it's faster to google it than ask AI. Just different tool for a different tasks.
 
i noticed myself using ChatGPT more when asking questions compared to using google because i get straight forward responses without having to click multiple links and visit multiple websites.

and even though my google usage has decreased, i don’t think it’s going away anytime soon, but with the arrival of a.i, there’s definitely been a shift similar to the: “video killed the radio star” era
