Is "entity SEO" something you actually work on, or just a buzzword?

For anyone who hasn't come across the term: entity SEO is the idea that search engines and AI tools don't really deal in keywords; they deal in things - a brand, a person, a place, a product - and the connections between them. So instead of optimising a page for a phrase, you're making sure the search engine clearly understands what your brand is, what category it belongs to, and who it's associated with.

The usual advice under that banner: consistent brand naming everywhere, schema, a clear About page, mentions on relevant sites.

Which is where I get stuck. Most of that is stuff good SEOs were already doing years ago under different names. I think it's a better way to think about the work, but I'm not sure it's actually new work.

So, honestly - has "entities" changed anything concrete in what you do, or just how you describe it? And if it has changed something, what's the specific task?

I think it’s mostly a change in framework rather than completely new SEO work. The concrete difference for me is being more intentional about building and reinforcing relationships between the brand, people, products, topics, and third-party mentions.

I think it has changed the way I look at SEO more than the actual tasks themselves.

A lot of the practical work isn't new, consistent branding, mentions, schema, About pages, topical relevance, etc. were already part of solid SEO.

The bigger change for me is thinking about the connections between those signals rather than treating each one separately.

For example, I’d rather have a brand consistently mentioned alongside the right topics, people, products, and publications than simply chase a higher number of keyword-focused links.

So I’d say “entity SEO” is partly a new framework for existing practices, but it can change how you prioritize and connect the work.

I think the terminology keeps changing entity seo, brand seo, topical authority, etc. but the fundamentals of good seo haven't changed much.
Good content, strong brand signals, relevant mentions, clear site structure and authority still matter. The name may change, but good seo is still good seo.

The interesting question is whether entity seo actually adds any new tasks, rather than just giving existing seo practices a new label.

That's a good way to put it. I also feel the biggest shift is being more deliberate about connecting the brand with the right topics, entities, and sources rather than focusing on isolated SEO signals.

Agreed. The individual tactics aren't necessarily new, but looking at how those signals reinforce each other does seem more important now, especially with AI-driven search relying heavily on context and relationships.

Fair point. Many of the core principles have been around for years. What interests me is whether AI search and knowledge graphs are simply rewarding good SEO practices, or if they're placing more weight on entity relationships than traditional search did.
