Is Directory Submission still effective for SEO?

There is a great "push", "propaganda", ....bla...bla... against the directories. But if you think about that: If you write unique description for every submission, than your "presentation" will get indexed. So you will end up with:
directory1/your-unique-presentation1
directiory2/your-unique-presentation2
directioryXYZ/your-unique-presentationXZY
....
So backlink from indexed subpage of some directory can hurt your rankings? I dont think so.... actually it can help.
On the other side, it is so "easy and convenient" to order 20 USD "package" to get XYZ - thousands directory submissions from some indian guys....

Yes it does work, I still use them. But I carrefully chose my directories :
_ I don't use more than 10-20 directories for a website
_ I try to get directory in the same niche if available
_ I tend to chose the directories with most trafic (if they don't even rank in Google they are probably useless).
There are tons of direcotry available and this is my way to filter. Most of the time it is the first kind of links I build because it's easy and free/cheap most of the time.
Also, it will quickly increase (useless) stats like MozRank/TrustFlow/AhrefsRank etc. They have nothing to do with Google rankings but high stats increase your ability to acquire better links via exchange/cross post with other blogs.

People that say "no" have no idea what a AAA directory can do. The spammy crap directories do virtually nothing, but if you can get either niche directories or Dmoz.org you'll have something real useful. The main problem is not every niche has good non-spammed directories and its VERY hard to get a Dmoz.org link. Which leads to a lot of "sour grapes" around here from people. But yes, if they are the right ones you aren't wasting your time getting good directory links. You should at least TRY to submit your site to Dmoz, and no a deep hunt for a quality directory in your niche. Definitely worth the effort on the off chance you score the links.

This is true, because real sites also have listings at both local and internationl directory type of sites. Of course, these have to be real sites, not SEO toys

Yes, but depends on directory, content, website isn't spammy.
In general, you probably could spend your time elsewhere more productively, but it won't hurt either.
Just remember it is only one small part of SEO for your site.

Yep as others have stated it does work still. Definitely still have to do everything else for it to help. These days IF YOU DON'T do it....it won't hurt. If you do it, it will help. Slightly. But then again every little bit helps as they say.

As long the directories are not spam to death and have good rep like DA then they are golden. Just check them out thoroughly and be sure still index by google. No point leaving your link if not.

This is true, Dmoz is pissing me off with a client though. I have a client with a large business that's been around forever and they won't list it. I have tried for a couple years and I just never get a response or get it listed, no idea what's going on, I don't even get a response. Maybe a competitor is moderating that section or something, frustrating cuz it's a nice link to have.
