It all depends on your niche and keyword difficulty. And your SEO strategy of course, I'm sure everyone on this forum has their own unique way to rank their sites.

I don't think its dying out. PBN still works. You can check my journey: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/m...-plan-to-scale-to-1000-pm-by-year-end.956097/ . I am ranking using PBNs.

Overall, it sums up as: Pure spam doesn't work anymore. You should know what you are doing. Its not about just building lot of links randomly anymore.

As I see, this would continue definitely until some considerable number of years. Yes, Google has become better. You can say, its more of an AI as they update themselves frequently. It was not the same weak algorithm as 5 yrs ago and it would not be the same as its today. It will become harder to rank.

Im not #1 yet but I often got kws to first page of G just with spam. Right now I have like 7-10k monthly SV ranked to #10 just with spam no pbns. Lets try to make it #1

the question is more will be google one day in the position to say backlinks are not important any more. we have so much info about the page and the usage that we use this to rank and devalue backlinks completely.

i think it will not happen. but there is a chance and then the backlink seller seo´s would be in a big troubles ;)

I'm betting that the people who know the real answer to this question, aren't going to tell anyone on the forum. Until after it's really dead. :)
Also, the advice of sticking with niches you know you can dominate in, doesn't make sense. That's like telling your client, hey i'd like to help but your product sucks.
I liked the advice that was to spy and test methods. Spying should be getting easier if the future. Testing methods, more expensive.?.

Yes Google is defiantly improving their pursuit of backlinks and what is good and bad ... I will add that the power of sending bad links at your competitor has decreased as well but can still "muddy" their backlink profile for the more questionable links they have.

Backlinks WILL ALWAYS BE IMPORTANT it will just be harder and harder to game the system which means get your work done now to build your site because new sites are going to be harder and harder to gain traction with unless you have a great new hip thing, idea, etc or can spend a lot on PR. Making it again in favor of those with the money (like everything eventually becomes in every emerging marketplace). Lets face it this is good for everyone turn and burn sites are horrible for the long term growth of the internet, business and those of us that have a passion vs just want a nice car.

Think the big change is google is sourcing out that second and third link in the chain and really looking at context if you are a food site and you link from a general forum like reddit it is not very powerful contextual is huge.

Organic Search is great and think it is gaining some traction again vs adswords since the SERPS are getting much more relevant to someones search vs ads are just spammed sometimes. Like for us catering in a very specific nitch the big people have now drivin up the prices just on the word catering and appear in our search for Adwords even though they have zero relevance. We have seen ad words cost triple in 6 months due to this.

So black hat is slowly dying (but really it has slowed down since what 2015) if you want long term results - backlinks need to be of quality, contextual and have relevant copy on the page to work. I think the power of branding links have been turned down a bit too unless it is a very high DA site and a relevant portion of the site.

We have had three branding nofollow links on big name sites 85+ DA in their blog, comment etc sections and it does not have near the juice of two years ago.

I think on page is getting a bit of a revisit too with all of the semantic word work Google is doing in the last year.

Yes but I bet your site is not over 6 months old, wait for the SERPS hit Google will find those links and it may not be your fault it will be somebody else over using that link path. There are three types of SEO now in my opinion 90 days, 6 months and long term and they are completely different.

if you want long term ranking and to slip ahead in the SERPS it takes contextual solid links it is not a matter of if now it is a matter of when with other links

cat n mouse game, google will always try and put there own self interests first
there a company there job is to make $, we little people will use very trick in the book
with tools and methods to get round google, times changes people change but this
cat n mouse seo will go on

Because Search Engines are not passives, especially Google! They always update their algo.

Why do people ask this question when they KNOW what the consensus community answer is? If OP believes that the sky is falling he should state his case in depth, rather than posing it as a question with zero hard data to prove the jump-to-conclusion. IMHO this topic is a waste of all your time, frankly it doesn't matter what may or may not happen in 5 years... windows for success open and close very fast in this business, too fast for planing/worrying 5 years into the future.

google is there to serve the best quality content, that is what built their brand and what continues to allow them dominance ... if a new search engine comes along that provides far superior organic product for people they will switch to it and what will happen to adwords and google in a year?

They are trying to provide the best product for us when we want "cruising motorcycle most comfortable easiest to drive" they do not want a bunch of click bate spam sites ... that will end them. Any other belief is foolish and more reflective of your personal bias vs the market place.

Ad words only exists due to the relevance of organic search and they know it

do not be surprised when your site dives in 6 months ... this kind of thought process is the disease not the cure and the more that try this the harder it will be for the rest of us to rank

I just gave exactly what you are asking for in my original reply to this thread.

Unfortunately for 99.9% the answer doesn't suit them so they won't heed message until its too late.

If it is an algorithm, it can be gamed. That should sum it up.

Traditional "Blackhat SEO" methods might not be as effective, but something else might come up due to the changes.

It can be gamed, but at what cost? The cost of SEO has been increasing over the past few years. The ROI is surely not the same. By this, one could infer that BH SEO is slowly edging towards its death-bed.

Mate, i've read your replies and you KNOW how it is going.

The time is coming for unsociable, short term mentality pseudo businessman to meet their end when using dog shit business models like aff marketing and adsense that have been peddled for way too many years.

People will start HAVING to build business relationships with other business in tangent industries and form unions of sort.

Just take a look at elle.com footer and notice any trends i have mentioned above ;)

What I said was from a programmer perspective, and not from an SEO expert perspective ( as I am not a seo guy). Now, if we consider popular techniques, it will obviously become tougher and tougher, because of the amount of people fighting to game the system.

This being said, everytime google introduces an update, there opens a new way of tricking the system. It has to be like this unless google is a total retard who does not follow any rule for ranking, which obviously isn't the case. IMHO, it is always a good idea to invest time into trying new things. Trying exactly what? I am not sure lol. That's the fun part!

Understood.
I am not saying SEO is dead. SEO is here to stay for some more time, but BH SEO is on its deathbed.
