I’ve dealt with situations where backlinks came from websites with high Domain Authority but hardly any traffic. At first, I thought having a high DA would help with rankings. But I’ve realized that not all backlinks are created equal, and the amount of traffic tells a different story.
If a site has a high DA but no traffic, that’s a warning sign. It usually means that the site has either been affected by an algorithm update, lost Google's trust, or is inactive. With Google focusing more on EEAT – which stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust – it’s clear they want to see real signs of quality, and traffic is one of those signs.
So, to get straight to your question: a backlink from a high-DA site that doesn’t get any traffic can still be helpful, but it’s nowhere near as impactful as one from a site that gets visitors and is relevant. I think it’s better to focus on backlinks from engaged, relevant and regularly updated sites, even if their DA isn’t high. In today’s SEO world context, freshness and the quality of the link source matter way more than just numbers like DA.
In my current strategy, I make sure to prioritise:
- Relevance of content or theme
- Referring site’s organic traffic trends
- Natural placement, like editorial links instead of spammy ones
- Whether the page linking to me is being indexed and crawled properly
Bottom line, DA is just one piece of the puzzle. A dead site with a DA of 40 doesn’t have the same impact anymore.
