One thing I have noticed over the years is that many SEOs spend more time buying links than auditing them.
A site can have impressive DR, strong traffic numbers, and look great on the surface, but once you dig deeper, the story can be very different. Traffic trends, topical relevance, indexing health, outbound link patterns, content quality, and overall trust signals often tell you far more than a metric ever will.
In my opinion, one of the biggest advantages we have as SEOs is the ability to properly audit a site before using it as a backlink source. A well-vetted link from a relevant, healthy website can often outperform multiple links that were chosen purely based on authority metrics.
I have also seen cases where websites with lower metrics delivered better results simply because they had stronger relevance and cleaner link environments. So I am curious to hear how others approach this.
When evaluating a backlink opportunity, what factors carry the most weight in your decision-making process?
Are you still prioritising DR, DA, and traffic, or have you developed a more advanced auditing framework that consistently identifies high-performing placements?
Interested to hear what metrics, signals, or red flags you pay attention to before placing a link.
