Internal linking still helps a lot, especially on bigger sites. I usually link from pages that already get traffic to related pages I want to push, instead of adding links everywhere just for the sake of it.

I try adding links to pages that get impressions but not many clicks. It can help those pages get more visibility from other parts of the site.
one thing people overlook is orphaned pages. you can write the best content but if nothing links to it, google barely crawls it. in my experience just making sure every new post gets at least 2 or 3 links from older, relevant posts makes a huge difference. and yeah, dont overthink the anchor text too much... just make it flow naturally in the sentence so people actually want to click it.
The effect is quite apparent to me in terms of the placement of links wherever it can be of uses for the reader. Normally I creates links on the basis of similar pages and then allow the better pages to pass on their relevance to the weaker ones.
Linking by topic has produced mch better results than trying to covers all pages with links. typically a couple of relevant links from high quality pages work much better than cramming 10 plus links every where.

I’ve seen the biggest gains from topical clusters, relevant anchors, and linking strong pages to weaker ones.

Only default flattest site structure linking: from blog post to next post within that page (not a category) where posts are listed (limit it to 10-15 posts) and back to home page not more.

For me an internal link should really assist the user in finding another usefull page. In addition it is important to uses new pages on sites that already have some authority.

I still think internal linking is underrated, especially on larger sites. It helps search engines understand the relationship between pages and can also improve how authority and relevance flow through the site.
