Instagram Algorithm Changes 2018

I read this in a blog/advice from a SMM, who stated she read it buried in folder in the IG help center. Where do we find this stuff directly from IG? It's embarrassing when one of my clients calls me to tell me about the change and I didn't already know about it.

It's really a mixture of a view things.

Observing patterns that seem odd. Maybe engagement has decreased somehow and it really stands out. Then researching and looking around to see what's going on in the industry. When I say 'the industry' i just mean the world of Instagram account growers/marketers. Develop a relationship with key players (don't have to be gurus) in IG account growth and talk every once in a while.

As for Instagram, they're quite.. how do i say.. shallow about what they release. They rarely openly state anything, but then they also rarely, openly deny anything either. It's like reading a shy woman's reaction to your advances; she won't say if she likes it nor will she say if she dislikes it lol..

I've heard IG will release updates in segmented waves to test new features, then later on release it worldwide. I just noticed these things from what others were saying combined with my own observations.

@speedypro so ur saying that engagement groups are worthless? Or just overusing them is worthless?

And maybe someone will know the answer or hear something about top hashtags. I know everyone see other top posts, but do anyone know how to reach top 9 nowadays??

Not saying it is worthless. Just saying, IG has the capability to track if end-users can disseminate with the data they give us. I work with some brands and they look at the insights and will flat out reject brand ambassadors based on these insights. So if your end game is to get brand sponsorships (paid gigs of $200-1000 per post), you better be ready to answer questions when your account comes up for statistical audit.

The guy with 600k feeds... I wonder if those are feature/repost/meme accounts. Because at 600k (true influencer account w/ high-end brand endorsements), advertisers will look at that data and reject collab. If they are true 600k 'celeb' Influencer accounts looking for $2000 sponsored posts and not $100 shoutouts, they wouldnt be using powerlikes to jeopardize their accounts. When I say true influencer account, I mean accounts with a real face behind it. An account with a real media deck, and a team of content producers/art directors as support crew. An account that generates 100% of their own content.

Great advice/info. Thank you. Is there a "scale" or standard for sponsored posts/shoutouts?

About the engagement groups, I think that's totally bullshit. Why? What's the point from these repetitive comments? "This is stunning", "Great post as always", "Post more, I need more". Some even are automated. Moreover where is the honesty?
I do engage. I go on the explore page and I interact. I see the content, think it over, and give my opinion, or add value to that post (sometimes I post even lengthy comments), and guess what? I get followers back, small but worth. They see something honest, and very engaging. (a human)
And what I have seen, is that all, or most of those accounts joining engagement groups fall on the same illusion. They all added same kind of comments. Not one single of them add something honest or engaging, and I don't want that in my content.
I didn't join these groups, due to this kind of interaction. And how about the real follower, when he sees these kind of comments? He won't fall down to believing that's real, and will soon unfollow. (specially the ones you want them in your follower base)

For the ones asking how to reach top 9 posts, well. What I have experienced is that, depending on the follow base, and on the engagement with your content, you can choose reasonable hashtags, that you believe you're more likely to reach the Top 9 with.

An example. You have 1000 followers. You get 60+ likes per pictur, then you could target hashtags with 50.000-300.000 posts.
So depending on the engagement you get, you get ranked there. The thing here to understand, and from what I believe how it works, is that you could reach the Top 9 on a 500K hashtag, if that day, not many great posts got posted with that hashtag. So you could use 5-10 hashtags to target 50K-500K, better 7 hashtags, that you believe you could reach the Top 9 with, and 3 for the bigger ones, so you use your chances to rank there.

What I mean by engagement is not what you see as likes or comments, but how Instagram sees the USER who sees your CONTENT.
That means, even those who scroll to your content and see your content but don't like, those are counted. (whether followers or not)
How come? I have seen on the top 9 posts, one post ranking the first (with 46 likes, 2 comments), the other 9th. (100 likes, 12 comments), so you don't see the engagement as who has more likes/comments. There are much complex algorithms to track what's good and what's not.

Let's be real, Instagram is developing better and better algorithms to give chances to everyone, so if you try to trick Instagram, you're tricking yourself. It's a big company we talkin' 'bout. Stay on page with the quality of content and reasonable hashtags and you get what you deserve.

Just as a proof, I have ranked on top 9 with reasonable hashtags, and I have the chance to get followers from there, not big deal, but, an investment in my growth. Like I said, this all depends on your page quality + size. And I said all of this out of experience of 5 months and still learning about all of this.

What are your thoughts about what I said? :)

@morched23mj In most of it i have to agree with you, BUT about commenting in engagement groups i believe it depends. Because if these comments are like u said i agree with you, but if you are in smaller group like 50-100 people with who you make a deal to make more reasonable comments like you put a question in your post and they answer or trying to make any engage with that what you are saying above the post i believe even if they are from engagement group they should be real enough, what do you think about commenting in that way?

About top 9 tags most of you make sense considering so many random posts being up there

Ig will always be updating in the background
It always has.

Most ppl have gone manual to make sterdy accounts with no bots.

Everyone no when they pull the plug it over that simple , there still be ways but very exspensive

The random logging was stopped till there ready to re apply it, they already tested the likes that worked ,so that on hold,
Now they'r moving to views, and the group posting, then image posting, then video posting, and when they're ready to turn everything on to stop bots in their tracks.

that was announced when random logging was tested, there continue testing what used in bots when it all over switches the spam filters all on.

There be no proxies to use at all that a fact, and residential proxies will cost the earth.

That would be one way to do the things. :)

I do agree with what you're saying overall. The algorithm is designed to create more of a "content economy" in a sense. That's why the chronological feed was removed. So that the "best" content would be highlighted. If you make efforts to engage across the platform then you can give yourself more exposure. Now naturally, people are anti-establishment. So these "hacks" will always exist, things like engagement groups, powerlikes, etc.

In late 2017, Gary V developed an idea called the $1.80 strategy. Which was a practice of commenting and engaging with the top 9 posts 10 times a day.
This in theory would expose your account quite a bit and help with growth.

@aduseia
Hey man!
Let's start with that, it's definitely a great post :D
However, I'd like to know on what are your assumptions based? Are u speaking from personal experience and observation or do You have a reliable source for it?

I would advise against use of engagement groups such as fuelgram...

also, are hashtags still worth it? i suppose ig shows you the posts depending on the posts you like and their hashtags.

Do you guys change your hashtags with every post?

Like I said before, based on what I've been hearing around the industry. And also what I've noticed myself.

Yes, ideally it is advisable to change your hashtags every post. Create 4-5 groups of different hashtags, so that you're not susceptible to being shadow-banned.

Keep your hashtag totally relevant to your post. Thats the best way to use hashtag. 7-11hashtags is a sweet spot I think.

What are your thoughts about what I said? :)
Absolutely! To really grow on Instagram you must add value not just to your own content but to others too, genuinely. Communicate with others in comment section and that way you gain a massive loyal following in a long term. That's the only way you can grow and maintain that growth in instagram forever! Your words at the beginning about comment groups made me laugh haha. Because it's true. Where is the honesty... An Instagram user will be turned off seeing the comment like as you described.
You've just nailed it. Naked truth on how to really grown on Instagram.

And one important thing to be considered is, leave a WITTY or Funny comment relevant to the post. The idea is to get people like it and you and they will come to your profile hopefully if your content is good they will follow.
Haven't you seen how YouTube witty comments get tons of likes?
Use that on instagram too.

if engagement groups are out this is really going to kill me  ive been using them to keep a consistent 900+ likes so if i stop using them my drop is going to be outrageously noticeable

- Pods/Engagement Groups could have adverse effects. IG has developed a way to understand if you use pods (this has been alleged for a while now). So it's being said that the use of comment pods may be detrimental.

Engagement Groups are still working, Instagram is somehow supporting having the group functionality otherwise I think they will cancel it.

powerlikes are still working but are not easy to get a real one :)

You should engage within 60 mins

You should engage yes, but within hour? Cmon man i don't think when you engage matters.

Also the top 9 posts is bullshit right now. I saw 4 posts from same user in Top 9 ...

Have you compared your engagement and follower growth using 30 HTs vs 7-11? I have tried both strategies on different pages (in different industries) and using less tags, even if they're more relevant to the exact content of the post, has always reduced the follower growth and engagement. From my experience, this is what I've discovered. Started a post about this here: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/should-hashtags-be-used-at-all.998492/

The functionality won't go anywhere, it's just the algorithm is more sophisticated at looking for patterns. That's what it's really about.
For now it hasn't been truly proven that EG's are dead, but we'll have to wait and see what sets in from the updates.
