I’ve been running IG ads and I’m curious, how does FB actually figure out someone’s “interests”? Sometimes the targeting feels spot on, but other times it makes no sense. Anyone knows how these interest tags are really assigned?

Facebook collects data from your activity across its apps — likes, follows, shares, and even what you watch or click.

They also factor in third-party data and website behavior if the user has visited sites with FB pixel installed.

Engagement with similar content is tracked too — watching videos, joining groups, or clicking ads.

Sometimes the interests seem off because FB predicts potential interest based on patterns, not explicit actions.

Great question. From what I’ve seen and tested, FB/Meta bases interests on a lot more than just what pages you’ve liked. They use your engagement behavior (what you watch, what ads you click, how long you view posts), your off-platform/web activity if there’s a FB pixel, your search history, and even third-party data. Sometimes it seems random because FB tries to predict what you might like in the future, not just what you already like.

Facebook tracks both activity and passive behavior to determine interests, key for better Instagram ad targeting
