Hello, I have a problem with traffic to one of my websites.

Important details: it is a media outlet in its own right. It is not a blog, so I have rules to follow regarding journalistic and media ethics (otherwise I will lose my status).

My site does not have a paywall or subscription, anyone can read it. I work on news stories, but I have a real issue with audience numbers, which are quite low. I have tried diversifying my topics and I post on all my social media accounts (X/Mastodon/BlueSky/Facebook/LinkedIn/Instagram).

The site has moved to WordPress and I use RankMaths to write articles that are well-ranked in terms of SEO.

What can I do to improve traffic without violating our code of ethics? (So no buying views, likes, etc.)

The media outlet has been around since 2021.

The site is on Google News, but I'm not getting any clicks from Google News. It's also on Discover, but I'm getting very, very few clicks.

Maybe you can try these:

1. Focus on headlines – Write clear, compelling, keyword-rich headlines (without clickbait).

2. Publish consistently and quickly – Especially for breaking news; timing matters.

3. Use Google News Publisher Center – Ensure categories, labels, and feeds are optimized.

4. Add original reporting or expert quotes – This stands out to both readers and algorithms.

5. Improve internal linking – Keep readers on-site longer by linking related articles.

6. Create content clusters – Cover key topics in-depth to build authority in specific areas.

Hi,
thanks for the advice, but apart from the third point, that's already what I'm doing :-/

Even on topics where I have real expertise, I get outdone by editorial teams that are bigger than me and produce less intelligent content.

Here’s a concise, natural-sounding plan to boost your site’s traffic ethically:

  1. Google News/Discover: Write clear, timely headlines with strong images. Publish consistently.
  2. SEO Tweaks: Target trending keywords, link related articles, and fix slow pages.
  3. Social Media: Adapt posts per platform—breaking news on X, deep dives on Facebook/Instagram. Engage, don’t just broadcast.
  4. Audience Growth: Start a newsletter, collaborate with experts, and share in relevant forums (e.g., Reddit).
  5. Repurpose: Turn articles into videos, podcasts, or infographics.
  6. Analyze: Check Google Search Console for missed opportunities. Study competitors’ best-performing content.
Stay patient—traffic builds over time with quality and consistency.

You realize ChatGPT suggested exactly the same thing to me, right? :D

Finally, ensure your site is fast and easy to navigate on all devices. A good user experience keeps people around.

I’ve worked with a couple of small news and magazine-style sites, and what you’re describing is actually pretty common, especially for outlets that try to stay ethical and not rely on clickbait or fake engagement.
One thing that helped a lot for me was focusing on the “timing” and “context” of the news, not just the topic itself. For example, publishing around trending events with a unique or local perspective tends to bring in organic traffic from Google Discover and social without breaking journalistic guidelines.
Also, if you’re already using RankMath, make sure your articles are optimized for entities and structured data (news article schema, author info, and publication date). That small technical step can improve visibility on Google News.

From my experience, building topic clusters around consistent themes (e.g., tech policy, local economy, or digital culture) helps create authority faster than covering too many random stories. Discover and News seem to reward sites that have a recognizable editorial identity rather than a mix of everything.
Lastly, don’t underestimate newsletters. Even a small but loyal email list often drives more engaged traffic than social platforms, which have been cutting reach lately.

To help grow your site’s traffic in a genuine and ethical way, it’s really helpful to get to know your audience better and create content that truly speaks to what they care about. Adding things like videos, podcasts, or interactive elements can make your stories more engaging and keep people coming back. Make sure your Google News and Discover settings are set up properly with accurate info and regular updates > but steer clear of misleading or exaggerated headlines. On social media, try to connect with your community by sharing content that fits each platform and encourages real conversations. Building an email list with thoughtful newsletters is a great way to keep readers engaged over time.

:suspicious: Keep an eye on your analytics so you can see what’s working and adjust your approach as you go.

You’re already doing the right things—now it’s about boosting engagement and authority.
Try focusing on unique local stories, stronger headlines, author credibility, and internal linking to keep readers longer.
Also, send a simple email newsletter to build a loyal audience—this is fully ethical and works great for media outlets.

Hello,
I don't know why this topic has been dragged out of the depths of the forum. But anyway.

I'm a highly specialized media outlet, and my problem is that the big newsrooms are my competitors in my field, but half the time, they're talking nonsense.

The newsletter is extra work, and I have a real issue with the tools available: none of them are GDPR-compliant. So I can't do it, and yes, my subscribers are extremely sensitive about this issue, so no, I can't just do whatever I want.
I had thought about creating a kind of premium paid newsletter, but none of the existing tools meet the need.

You have to keep in mind what type of SEO they had done in past and then proceed according to that only.

Try focusing on original reporting or expert insights Google News favors unique value. Strengthen E-E-A-T (author profiles, transparency, citations), and use structured data for articles. Also, optimize headlines for curiosity without clickbait.

Since this is a media outlet site, you need to cover different type of news quickly on the blog.

building topical authority beats chasing random keywords every time, plus newsletter subscribers convert way better than social followers ever will
