Now we have got the porn, mum jokes, minor insults and other shit out the way lets get back to it.
I think I owe most of you a reply, since you are being all thoughtful and shit.
I've also had a couple of days to reflect on my depressive as fuck post.
Hughes, you can have anything in life you want.
How much savings do you have? Do you think your skill set is marketable enough to leave your job? Can you get a stellar reference from your employer if you do leave?
Lets be real here for a moment. You are:
1. A smart guy.
2. A funny guy.
3. Know webdesign / IM / SEO well enough from your 'honest posts'
Do you really think you can't quit your job and make it if you needed to?
Your family sucks, blokes suck, work is boring, yup. Sounds like an early mid life crisis. Most guys try to get a younger girlfriend and a sports car. They piss away a life of hard work and feel empty.
What are they missing? Doing something which they are actually passionate about. You used to enjoy your life. Now you don't.I am willing to bet you are not feeling fulfilled or challenged. That is the problem with 'smart' and 'motivated' people. You can make 250K a year sitting in a room browsing the internet for 8 hours a day and after a while you will hate it. You should know this better than anyone on the internet.
You also know no one else can fix your shit for you. Your friends and family will not satisfy you.
My advice to you, after asking rhetorical questions and making you read what you already know is to get your shit together and make a change in your life. Do what you always wanted to do. If you want to be a freelance web designer or a paper boy go ahead and do it. I am not some ass hat who will tell you 'if you love what you do the money will come' but I know from the times you are not trolling you are smart enough to squeeze beer out of an orange. If you had to you could make money doing what you want to do.
What you want to do may also include moving to some 3rd world country and living in a hut by the ocean. Only you know what will get you excited. Just do it. This is not a 'live your legend' type of talk, but you will not be satisfied until you find what makes you happy and do it.
Either way, good luck. You deserve it all in life and I hope this is not a troll so I don't feel like an a - hole trying to help.
I could live for just over a year with no income with current savings. My skills are super marketable. I wouldn't count on the reference I've been a sarcastic little twat for the past week.
I'm sure I could make it as in support myself, I have done for the majority of my adult life. This is the only job I have ever had I was self employed before and probably will be after.
WTF do you mean blokes suck though? Do you think I am gay? Just because I have a love heart around a man does not mean I am gay... Nothing against gays at all but I don't play for their team.
I think I just need to do something, just walk out and do something whether its start another business or just find another job. I might even have 3 months off... but something needs to change that's for sure.
I am not moving to a 3rd world country, I don't even want to move to far from where I am now. I like it here and I quite like my dog.
I am an ecommerce guy, not some fucking guru retard SEO blogger.
It's all about perspective brother.
At my day job I (I quit in August to work on my own ventures full time) I was making over $160k/year consulting. You know what? I was still unhappy. All of my friends came to me and said "how the hell can you be unhappy making that kind of money?"
It was my perspective. I could make all the money in the world and not be happy having a CEO coming into my office all day long. I worked 5 years without a day off before I quit.
Plus, who cares if your friends are boring? Most of my friends are convicted felons working for $12/hr. I still love them to death. They would help me bury a body, and they have proven as such (almost).
Happiness and money are not intertwined.
Being lonely? Yea that sucks. I've been married for 10 years and still love it. I can't offer you any advice on that. The ladies have always loved me.
You have made a good point on your old CEO/Boss.
I quite like my boss as a person, but the last 2 days has been totally wasted due to total fucking bullshit he has me doing.
I think they know I am not happy and I am considering moving on by now, I first raised my unhappiness 2 months ago telling them my problems, my opinions on how we could do a better job and explaining how I could do with an extra pair of hands on a lot of the jobs.
I was not looking for another IT guy, a little goon on minimum wage to answer calls, put stuff in boxes and a lot of that mundane bullshit would have been very handy. It would free me up to grow the websites further, find new markets, maybe start another website in a different industry niche... Just allowing me to focus on what I have proved I am already good at.
Nope. His answer was "if you want that it's coming out of your profit share...."
In 3 years they had under 3,000 in sales. We passed 200k lifetime sales in just over a year of me being there.
His ultimate problem is he is too hard nosed to back down and unless he is stood 4 foot from you telling you what to do he does not believe he is managing you.
Meanwhile I believe a manager or boss' main aim is to get the best out of his staff. He just grinds people down.
Today I have been going through 6 months of shipping invoices and writing order numbers on them, and updating the format of our specifications on a load of product we sell by hand.
It's pointless, today was a day of my life spent on shit which does not matter a fuck.
Dude, if I was 25, single (no family commitments) in a job that I didn't enjoy I would try to scrape 6 months salary together and jack it all in and MOVE.
If you are feeling adventurous then spend some time abroad but even just moving to another part of the country could give you the boost you need.
Move somewhere else away from family/friends, get a part time Bar job to earn a little side cash and have an instant social life, then get back into web design.
Maybe even think about taking a college course just to jump start the old brain and meet new people.
Without any bullshit distractions it should help you focus, and if you can find something to get passionate about then great.
I think you're right, more right than most people on here.
I'm stuck in the job for another 3 weeks otherwise I lose out on a bonus, then I am free to leave.
I could survive for 15 months or so if I quit tomorrow. I might seriously look at moving away I think it would open a fair few doors but ultimately I quite like where I am, its a good place, there is shit to do and its semi interesting.
Wilson said it before I had a chance.. go travel dude.
You are wasted working in that place for starters.. you're young, free and single with a good grasp on IM and with a heck of skills at your disposal people would pay big money for. My advice - Get some money together even if it's sticking out the job a bit longer, then do as wilson said gtfo out of there for a bit. Set up some simple online projects (this will be no problem for you) and travel, it will solve most of your issues I see here.
I know them feels about your friends. I've been there, I'm 27.. the majority of my friends are still as you describe, it's not their fault and as hard as it is we shouldn't judge the fuckers for it, they just don't see the bigger picture or the world outside their small bubble.
Seriously.. you have the skills and knowledge to make money and travel. Just do it you'll thank yourself later. If you do then make sure to come visit me in Spain we'll tear shit up.
You hit the nail on the head with the friends thing, they are great lads but they really do live in their own little world and with the greatest respect to them they are not the sharpest tools in the shed.
Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
On a serous note, boohoo! Job is not meant to be fun, we work becouse the things we like and enjoy cost money and we need to get that shit from somewhere.
You have a good paying job, keep it and work on IM till you can make enough to quit your job.
Oh fuck off you twat.
If you have never had a fun job I feel sorry for you, I really do.
I have no interest in IM.
As for your job, I think, approach people you work with and explain how you feel about your current position and tell them what you would like to do. If they won't let you... well then - you already were successful as a freelancer once or start your own web design company. You sound like smart enough guy to pull that off and that will bring some excitement in your life for sure.
Best of luck OP!

Been there and done that with web design, I cannot be doing with retarded clients calling me because their son/niece/dog tried to make a minor change on wordpress and they shat their pants and fucked it all up. Then complaining about it when I bill them for a day it took to fix it.
I cannot be doing with people who want me to work 24 hours a day on their shit, who want daily updates on how I am getting by on writing code, people who don't know their arse from their elbow but they read a blog post on conversion rates and think all buttons must be red........
Their are an awful lot of retards in that game, the more you charge the less mongs you find but ultimately some are still there, hiding and waiting.
The question is what do you want to do?
You cannot change the way people behave or make themselves interesting to you.
The only control you have is over yourself. So, may be you can go to work with
little more energy than usual, change your vibe and it will affect your workplace, your
fellow mates.
You can keep your job but on the side you can do many more things,
can you not if you really decide to?. One or two exciting, adventurous experience in a week or
even a month can actually make life more interesting.
So, are you going to wait for life to happen to you, other people to come entertain you
or are you gonna go out and do the things that entertains you and
excites you and have exhilarating experiences?
I don't know what I want from life and I don't even know how I would find out.
You kind of remind me of myself in situations where I feel down at random days, for example If I think I am wasting my time
Im near the age 16................................
Think about that
Ok thank you, next.
Was in a similar but different situation myself.
I was working for an offline business (home improvement related). They were on the verge of going bankrupt. My first year I brought them up to $800,000. Around 1/4 of those profits were pure luck from a hurricane. Yet still, I built them a huge online funnel and proved to myself I could generate leads & bring the cash flow in.
You said you started doing web design and are now doing customer support and other shit. I started with web design. Then took over their marketing and lead gen. Made myself a 1 man marketing team who could keep the phone ringing.
After that first year or so I wasn't happy with much of anything. The owner had no management skills. Zero accounting skills. He was hilarious, charismatic, borderline comedian, but dumb as fuck. In my eyes he was completely useless aside from the paperwork. He had the licenses, insurance, financing, bbb, all the credentials on paper to do the work. I was the heart of the business. And was gravely underestimating my role. One day I just thought, "I made this guy a lot of money, he's blowing it at the casinos, cheating on his wife, this business wouldn't exist w/out me".
So I raised the stakes. Told him I wanted commissions raised from 8 to 12%. Then started pulling 4% into a separate funnel building exactly what I did for him. Doing it for myself and my brother. The branding, copy, website, social media, directories, reviews, youtube videos, classifieds, everything on my own. I worked my ass off building 2 companies at the same time. Then I stole his top salesman (my brother), we got licensed, insured.... that was the smartest decision I made in my life. Even if I didn't have my brother I could have hired a broker off craigslist and subcontracted everything.
All that mattered, all the matters to me till this day is leads leads leads. It's hard work, I don't always like it, but it's exciting and like mining for gold.
My instinct is you want more autonomy and control. Whatever you did for this business to bring it's sales up.... I'm sure you witnessed a lot of bullshit, mistakes and failure. So you have the unfair advantage of knowing and not programming those failures into a new business model. To duplicate, replicate whatever success you were able to produce. That's me speaking from my gut.
Speaking logically, ecommerce sites scare me. That's not my field. So I wouldn't feel safe launching one myself.
But you've already done it (to some extent) successfully. So you have some insider knowledge. You know a certain industry inside and out. You probably know other industries, markets, keywords, etc to avoid. You gotta think about the future. How to pivot from the position you're at. Maybe the last thing you wanna do is replicate the business you're working for now. Maybe you feel you don't have the time. But if it's making money it's making money. All businesses have room for improvement. To simplify, automate, eliminate clutter and increase the bottomline.
Regardless of what you do, you really have 2 choices. Get another job or start your own business. Start whatever. Sell anything. Even if you're trading for less money chances are you'll be richer and better off. I took a blow to my earnings when I broke off. Lost a huge line of credit. So I had to scale slower. But I worked that much harder and more efficiently. Just KNOWING I was working for something I'D OWN, that I HAVE CONTROL, I can't explain how motivating that is. I did help to have a partner. But he knows shit about marketing. I had to take all that pressure on myself and explode. Take whatever pressure you're under and explode. Aim it in the right direction and do it like your life depends on it.
If it means that much in the first place.
That's an awesome story. It's certainly inspirational.
If you can make it happen so can I.
I was feeling similarly burnt out a few years ago.
The job started off fine, I was 19 and I was basically fixing computers. I was ok with that at the time.
After a few months, I was handling customer support, repairs, deliveries and training up new unqualified people, because apparently I was the only one who knew what was going on. Most of my days were spent working from 7 to 7, as well as most Saturdays.
I ended up hating the job, so I just decided to quit and move. The company still contacts me every now and then. Apparently they still don't have any staff who know what they're doing.
The job I did was amazing when I started. I really did enjoy it but the role has changed to the point where it's just not the same job at all.
All the interesting stuff is done, and all they need to do is find someone to keep it ticking over.
The problem is all these jobs to keep it ticking over are shit, boring and not my cup of tea.
What is it that you heart truly longs for?
I'll give you a hint: pick a person that you truly admire - alive or dead. Their lifestyle, their way of thinking, whatever it is and go for that

.
Thank you pewep and thank you for your PM. It's appreciated.
That is good advice you have given me, I will give it some though.
Any software dev or design job gets boring. I don't stay anywhere for longer than 6 months. The only way to make money, learn new stuff, keep excited about the regular 9-5 is to job hop. I've been in the biz for a long time, and my network of dev friends are just the same. A friend of mine spent the last year of his programming job watching pluralsight videos. He was so bored. He quit and went backpacking in Europe.
You'll be worth much more and be able to market yourself anywhere if you job hop in the programming/design field. And, you won't get bored. I've been so bored before and checked out and didn't give a fuck if I was fired... actually wanted to get fired a few times, so I would come in late and just fuck around. Only reason why I didn't quit is because the food was awesome.
I know about job turn around in IT, I completely understand it but I get a buzz from seeing the thing you work on working and making money.
I won't get that from leaving jobs every 6 months or so, that's madness.
No. Go to xhamster or wherever if you need but embedding it here just seems a bit desperate.
Yeah ok I'm single but I'm not desperate.
I'd pay $97 for a whole year of no infractions. But then I'd feel compelled to create a BST just to troll. I'd want to advertise for low quality content. It would be the first of its kind. No one ever has the balls to put "Low quality content here for cheap" in their sales threads when we all know that it is.
Stop putting ideas in my head... that is fucking genius.
The number one thing I did to improve my life is to read a shitload of books. Mainly philosophy and psychology. Give it a try.
I have an A level in philosophy, been there done that most of its just shite about nothing.
My favourite philosopher was a French fuck called Jean Paul-Sartre, did a great book called existentialism is a humanism. I must have read it 30 times, its great.
It's basically summed up like "man exists first, finds himself, surges up in the world and defines himself after" (I don't know the exact quote).
It means we are alone, everything is down to us, their is no god, nothing is determined, our actions effect everyone.... all good and inspiring stuff.
Then what did that fucking cunt do as he was on his deathbed? He said he never published it, said it's all shit and he believes in god.
Fuck JPS, what a fucking coward.
Move away. Go to an Asian country with cheap life or something and start working for yourself
No.
