More importantly, focus on building YOUR business, YOUR brand, and quit trying to fuck over other people.
Unfortunately though, you CAN hurt your competitors rankings if you know what you are doing. But lets face it, karma will come back to bite you in the ass. And while you may think that hurting your competition in the near term is worth it, chances are they are likely building their business while you are wasting time trying to screw over your competitor. Who do you think will win in the long run?

Took the words right out of my mouth. Seriously people just respect those that are beating your rankings and learn from them and beat them in their own game. Just don't do anything to hurt them.
Treat others the way you want to be treated. I would hate for someone try and take my websites down so why do it to someone else.

This is where I would expect G to straight up lie. It is not in their interest to state you can harm your competitors.

Pretty much my line of thinking as well
I don't exactly trust Google's ability to discern between a competitor hurting me and someone I hire messing up and hurting me. If I create a bunch of backlinks like a fool and get spanked, couldn't I just say, "it was my competitor trying to hurt me! the backlinks just look natural and diversified so it would look more legitimate!"
Kind of irresponsible of Google to say there is almost nothing that can be done.

What else can they say - yeah btw if you send 100k Scrapebox blasts at a competitor it will send them dancing for weeks maybe months.
And for those sad f*cks that do that, grow up and try and rank your own sites rather than destroying other businesses that may well have family to feed.

Absolutely but the karma part is crap meant to keep people in line. There is no karma, I mean look at what is happening in Syria and Afghanistan...
The only karma is that humans can create a living hell on earth all by their own actions.

There is nothing in that answer except for the last paragraph or so where he states "there is nothing... etc." a competitor can do to hurt your rankings.
Aside from that, he doesn't state how this can be differentiated inside google's datacenters..
As well as its extremely plausible he's not allowed to say, "THERE ARE WAYS competitors can hurt your rankings." If you're google and you run a business based on relevant search queries that can be manipulated by a couple hundred computers, would that not simply undermine google's credibility?
I'm not saying you are right or wrong, but based on the fact they can't say that, as well as the several people saying they get webmaster reports for "webmaster link building campaigns," how on earth are they gonna differentiate the USER behind the campaign?

Yes, I agree with you, Kingofbigmac. Even in the virtual world that we live in, people should still continue to respect each other. We can beat our competitors by learning more about their mode of operation, not ruining them.

From my experience, many people confuse on-page SEO and off-page SEO -- even experts! It's not because you build blackhat/greyhat links that your website needs to look spammy as well. If your website is completely whitehat (unique high-quality content, no keyword stuffing, no hidden text and so on), there is no way for Google to know if the blackhat/greyhat links come for you or not.
I believe that almost nothing can hurt a competitor (under certain conditions), and that therefore, it is almost impossible to hurt your own website. Sure, if it's new or if you are really stupid, you can get it sandboxed for a while, but it will ultimately come back stronger.

The reality begs to differ. Google is a big snake and puts out propaganda to confuse, intimidate and hide true search result metrics.
The Seo world mimics the real world, some people would do anything to get ahead. If you want to see deadly combat, go after certain keywords.
It might be true competitors cannot harm your site, but they can make your rankings suffer and Google would be the punisher.
Seo is not for the timid and i would not put any trust into what Google says on this topic, because it is a lie and they know it!
