I know this has been suggested before, but I want this to be implemented as an alternative to PM, not as a global site wide chat.
Why? It means you can chat faster, and probably you wont need to take some conversations to another platform.
So, basically like Reddit chat between users. You could press start a conversation and invite a user / users to the chatroom, and you can talk with the same functionality as in PM.
Thoughts?

Forums are forums, I wanted to have the same feature, but later I realized it kills the community.

Alternatively, you should be able to see your inbox messages more clear with the help of the push notification system of BHW

I keep that disabled so I am not sure if it helps, but it should. This is a no no anyway.

How does this idea kill the community?
It is literally just like a live messenger for personal conversations. Like Skype for PM's..

Your mind navigates you to type a message in the chat, rather than a PM and rather than creating new thread.
(so example would be, you engage in thread and after a while you decide to chat with someone instead of quoting him in the thread = engagement drop)

Or to simplify, adding a new option will result: the community using the new option, and that will result with engagement drop for other options, which are Threads and PM.

Purpose of forum is to create a new thread so everyone could see new content and eventually engage. Thousands of readers can add their thoughts and help each other. You could run a thread for fun and help other marketers, because they can drive conversation further and get their answers.

Ability to send a PM is fairly enough when it comes to chat mimic. It also helps admins to moderate messages more clearly.

Detracts from the content being produced on the forum. No forum owner wants people to be communicating on a chat instead of in the open and sometimes pm. Chats ultimately draw too many people into them and then normal discussions drop in volume and quality... equals a large fart noise.

** To be more clear.. a forum from user perspective is a place to communicate and learn. But from owner and mgmt angle, it's like any other web business.. SEO/traffic (and by proxy, success) is based on content production. Why would you want your stream of valuable (to readers) content to be shat on by people using chat, bearing in mind chat content is not permanent or indexed ->> ya don't.

Also, the benefit to users of implementing chat on a forum like BHW is marginal at best. There's already vibrant discussions happening here, chat wouldn't provide anything significantly better than what is already here for most persones.

I think it's a horrible idea, I think it will get spammed with people asking how they can make money and there won't be any valuable pieces of information on it, plus will be more work for the mods to keep track of what people are chatting about, a total waste of time, if you want to chat there is the lounge and make sure to not miss the weekend threads xD

Just wanted to explain what I meant by this quickly.
The original link that was put in the OP as an example - Global site chat, that means all registered member can communicate together.

My idea - Private live chat that can be done from user to user - all still visible, you can send image links, use reactions / emojis, etc.

So, when you press Start conversation, you can do a live chat with the user.
I don't mean a global chat room.

PM = private message = what you call live chat, it's the same, just there is no Facebook chat tab omg dude lol

Buddy you already have that private chat... updated to the maximum (with push up notifications) it can't get any better.

Just STOP :D or go chat where you have live chat boxes lmao
