Anyone here on BHW using a Linux-based OS (like Ubuntu, Arch Linux etc.) to do Internet Marketing?

Im thinking of switching from windows because i just f-ing hate using it, but as i see most software is already windows-compiled.

If you want GUI you can't beat windows IMHO.
If your gonna use Linux you have to be in the shell.

True. Id love to use console in bot/SEO/etc. software but that would mean this software needs to be open source or compiled to run in the shell

Technically for using Linux properly you need to know a little bit of code on any language you feed comfortable.
Python, PHP, Perl, Node.js, etc. You can run scripts using like:
php myscript.php
and also send variables in the commands to operate. This is the way many nice codes like nmap are done.

So thats why you need to know SSH basics and practice.

I've used both but I always come back to windows. Its just the lazy man's OS

I have tried using Linux some time ago but returned back to Windows. Guess I am too lazy for Linux =)

i used ubuntu before, great OS i really liked it

now iam looking for a new laptop to install on it

but for IM i still in love with win7

I use Linux as a desktop os simply because as a php dev I find it easier to work with when developing new web apps. I could do it in windows but actually Linux provides a better environment for me because I do more in a bash shell than I do in a file explorer. I used to be a Microsoft hater but then I grew up and realised it was a bit silly.

You will run into issues if you want to use 'IM software' because a lot of it is programmed just for windows and runs badly in Wine and slowly under a VM but I would avoid running that stuff locally anyway. A well connected and specced VPS is probably more suitable - if that's your thing.

Just to touch on something someone mentioned earlier, Linux has several different desktop environments and the features compare favourably against windows (particularly KDE, IMHO - I don't use it because I'm a resource hog and I prefer xfce) so it's certainly not just for those who live in the terminal.

Additionally, most webservers with WordPress, magento, pligg and other open source CMS's will likely be using a Linux or BSD based operating system to serve your sites so I'd reckon most people involved in driving online sales have some involvement with Linux.

BTW, I posted this from my Linux powered Android phone :-)

I use debian 8.

If you install debian xfce, it is somewhat different from windows and it supports my old laptop out of the box.

And it's a lot easier to script than windows is. I've just written a bash code today to backup my windows dedi that runs seo crap(check out cygwin).

The thing about IM tools is that they have to be made on Windows for your non-technical users to be able to use it.

Don't be afraid to put linux debian on your desktop. It's a lot faster than windows 7.

Yes, some games run shit under wine or may not run at all, but most run. And you should be working, not playing anyway.

You simply can't beat bash scripts and crontab for backing up your everyday work, like your home directory, passwords and other project notes.

I've made the change to debian a few months ago and I couldn't be more happier.

Fuck microsoft and that you have to agree to tens of pages of licence and privacy agreements for turning your pc on, doing anything on your pc and watching porn.

Me, Ubuntu Linux user. I have Windows inside VirtualBox for some specific Windows only apps (Traffic Spirit for example).
Browsing thru Ubuntu. Running SEO tools on a virtual machine.

modern day laptops / desktop system sold come with enough cpu and ram to be able to use virtualization environments, used all version of windows except vista I think intensively, but, for main OS I always see ubuntu like main choose . First of all I see no reason to run any IM tool in real computer ( way too many bad things can happen ), plus most of the time home users have way too low bandwidth speed ( upload/download - witch makes IM tools running even slower ) .

Bots, license costs, programming tools, security, privacy, full control of the OS, speed, no virus, among other reasons.

Same reasons ! Linux is great to save CPU from antivirus & malwarebyte !

Archlinux here, with fvwm as window manager, i mostly use a bunch of terminals (urxvt)
My system takes about 300Mo of ram once done loading, chromium takes the 7.7G left :)

I've always been a linux guy, but more into macs recently which is still unix. Windows if you want to make Billy boy richer, for everything else its unix

Yeah, most of devices that are not microsoft will run UNIX based system, Android is based on Linux/UNIX, as well as every apple devices, and other stuff like GPS.
