Images for SEO, a must have even when not needed?

My sites currently do not need to have images. In fact, it would be difficult and weird to insert images into them. I would have to rephrase stuff and essentially venture further from the site's core functions & topics to add images.

Is it better to remain without images than to do this and possibly get off topic? I do not want to inadvertently harm SEO while trying to improve it.

I'd say it's better not to force images in if they don't serve a purpose aesthetically, functionally or improve the overall flow. If they're irrelevant or worsen the user experience it might even hurt SEO.
 
Images sell.

Image SEO is a real thing and has been for years.

Name the images LSI KWs, and even send backlinks to them.

There have to be images you can have made, or make yourself, that relate to your site and if you properly SEO them they will show up in Google images and the anchors will help you rank.
 
If adding images feels forced or irrelevant to your site's content, it’s better to leave them out
 
I would say leave it out for now. You're feeling forced to do something that common sense says you should leave. It's never a good time to do something when you feel that way.
Get it off your mind for a while, you will figure it out with time.
