Images alt tag in ecommerce websites

I noticed that a lot of big ecommerce website didn't have alt tag description for the images of their products.
Is there a reason for that ? Is the point that avoiding duplicate content ?

Nope. Just bad onpage SEO.

Is it ok if there is several photos for the same article with the same alt tags ?

bartosimpsonio is correct, that is bad on page.

My pictures are about the only things that I can say consistently stay at the top of google for. My pictures are always in the first row in google images. I use tags in my images.
