I'm Quitting Social Media...

Been deactivated for more than a year now and it's a hell of a difference.
A point they didn't touch in the social dilemma is not only does it affect people's opinions and decisions, but how easily it changes your mood was what triggered me to get rid of it. Like, why do I need to know everyone's shitty take on a trending subject? Why do I need to know every bad thing happening around the world? A simple 1 minute scroll on facebook could let me realize there is one random guy who abused a poisoned a stray dog or that there was some explosion in another city or that there are people being vacated from their homes without notice.

How are we supposed to consume all of this information? How are we even supposed to feel about this? Don't underestimate how a single post can affect your day.

Agreed. I see a video of a group of people forcing people in shops to kneel down, that's enough to ruin my day. I wish facebook just had good things on, like dogs being cute and stuff, but sadly it's 50/50 inflammatory stuff.

Some inflammatory posts off the top of my head

  • Why the right wing need educating
  • Why we need to hire more women than men
  • Why women are better than men
  • Why we cant call people by their genders anymore
  • Why all white people are subconsciously racists.
  • Why 5G is dangerous and we need to burn it down
  • Why coronavirus is less deadly than the flu
  • Why the government shouldn't force us to quarantine with covid19
You get the drift, social media is just full of inflammatory topics led by people who have a lack of education. The US really need to take control of social media and bring in some harsh regulations, enough is enough. They also need to tax data collection. It's like a psychologist is in your head without you even knowing, all day every day.

huh Question, like that how you going to promote , marketing your Stuffs on Social media? :suspicious:

It's come to my attention I have got these crazy mad habits of checking instagram or facebook for literally no reason whatsoever. After watching the Social Dilemma on Netflix...I've come to terms with these platforms are not healthy for me one bit....I'm not going to lie, I have deactivated accounts many times in the past but maybe-maximum 2 days later I'd be back in the loop again because everybody else is. As I'm getting older I'm thinking...no I can go this. Go off grid and see how this effects friendships and the time in my day.

Has anyone else gone through these sort of thoughts, or gone completely off grid?
What I use Social media is to keep myself updated with things that are happening around me - the trends and other stuff. So It is sometimes helpful some times just wasting time.

whatsapp is okay, it is a way to communicate with ppls like other default modes

I deleted fb + insta + whatsapp 3 weeks ago.

It was not that hard...

I never thought about quitting social media, I spend around an hour every day

planning to watch the movie Social dilemma, many suggested already

No personal social media accounts for 6 years.

I've got work based twitter, facebook and insta BUT we hardly do anything with them to the point it's just there as a brand exercise.

Twitter we just retweet bloggers we support, facebook is a customer service platform and insta is turning into a "give me shit for free" DM marketplace. Every year I keep meaning to grow our social audience but every year I just can not be arsed with it. The ROI just isn't there till we hit 100k+ users so I've just let them all "go" really.

social media is just a tool. For some its super beneficial, and some get whole genocide of attention span.
what you need to do- change your attitude towards it. building a strong willpower. be a creator, not a consumer.
I wonder how people are trying to get good at smth in life if they cant even control what they tap on their smartphones

Yes Twitter is completely toxic, instagram is totally fake and makes you feel you have a bad life, facebook well don’t even know what it is anymore exc an ads garbage so yea I go off too and it feels very healthy to do it

I deactivated the mobile app and blocked Facebook on my browsers for around 6 months. I wasted a lot of daily time surfing they full of ads and trash feeds, full of bias, aggressive ideas, fake news... I still use the FB messenger to contact my friends, use Instagram 15 mins a day in toilet for hot girls dose. I still use facebook around 30 mins per week now on mobile browser to update how some of my friends doing, getting married, having kids...so at least I remember their names when we meet again.

I haven't deleted my account, just unfollowed everyone, excepting some news sources I might check once in a while. Like this, I got rid of the useless stuff that I was bombarded with daily

Deactivated all social profiles in October 2018 and it's been really nice so far. I can feel so much of difference but it gets very lonely at times. Meditation saves me in such hours though. Better stay raw than getting polluted by all the mind polluting crap!

I had a social media account back then on a network called iWiW, before Facebook was a thing. That was the last time.

For me the only use of personal social media accounts is to be able to login to sites without registration.

I'm off the social media grid. I already have enough troubles without adding more stress and worry from social media.
Another bad one is dating apps, so many crazies on those too.
DAting apps are like a bomb to anyone who is not getting what they want... I don't use it anymore...

Well if you cant control it, best you leave it -- selectively I will suggest. Work related ones, if you work in that space, can be kept on PC login mode only, not mobile where the notifications can draw you back. Personally, I found I was much better off without personal accounts in the most popular social media spaces. Good luck...Its going to be hard at first, but find something positive to do with that time and soon you will hardly notice it is not there.

Congrats on taking this step.
This year, i made a habbit of using social media just once a week that too for not too long, it helps me not to waste time that i can use in productivity.

I stopped using Instagram two weeks ago and also reduced my YouTube usage to a minimum. It's been the most productive weeks I've ever had to experience in my life. I am definitely not going to go back.

Social media are toxics and influence lives and choices.

In my country if a girl has more Instagram followers than a boy, she will never date with him.

Approvals, followers and likes are more important than human beings.

I don't want to be part of this sh*t.

I did it before. A really good thing to do if you are stuck on notifications and checking. What I can say from my experience, you will not take a phone and want to check something and realize that you don't have anything to check. But after a week or 2, you will stop it.
Also after some time, I started to use them again and it was way healthier. Stopped facebook totally, left only on Instagram, but that was way healthier than before.

All in all - you are doing a good thing. Do it always when you see you are stuck in checking for no reason. It drains energy!
