Hi, guys:

I'm traveling to Mumbai in a couple of months. Part business, part pleasure. I'll be there for at least two months.

I've never been to India and I'll like to:
- get to know the city (I know it's huge tho, 12,5 millions!)
- meet good developers for a startup I'm... well, starting
- eat and have fun.

It is horrible there. What I did was to go straight from the airport to a "hill station" (look it up) called Matheran. Spent a week acclimatizing, then I continued exploring. If you are used to modern western cities, Indian cities can seem like hell on earth. Pavement poopers and filth everywhere.

As for developers, try Bangalore.

I would like to know whatever tourist guides lack: what not to do, hpw to address people, where to eat that it's not a made-for-tourist restaurant... I don't know. You tell me.

I'll be there helping a company to develop a software.

Ok, note taken. Didn't think of a water park in India but it's obvious you have more than one! I'll go. Sounds fun.

I don't know where I'm going to stay. I know the city is big, so it depends on where this company's offices are located. I'll ask that.

I was told by a friend that India es filthy. But, it's also a BIG country, so I asked another one whom is a fly attendant (he has been there a few times) and he told me it is not filthy at all. So i'm guessing it depends on the city.
where were you?

Man, I love to eat. When I went to Ecuador I gained 8 pounds. And I would do it again. Hahahahaha!
 
Man India is great bro. I was born in the United States, but ive went like 4 or 5 times with family. Here are some things you should know:

1. Rule 1, always drink bottled water. Your body needs time to adjust to the different water type, and its not a good idea to drink local water if your in India for vacationing.

2. Inida has some of the most beautiful landscapes, the cities are poor, but definitely check out the Himalayas if you can. The greenery and wildlife is awesome. Don't make judgements by seeing all the poor people on the street. Everyone is adjusted to that lifestyle so dont feel too bad.

3. When you go, call everyone bhai/bhen means brother/sister they will be more friendly with you.

4. Take some time to walk around, you will be surprised the kinds of things you can find. There are food/snack stands everywhere. Try the sugar cane juice it is also excellent, you can find it alot of places.

If you happen to see this girl around, tell her I want to marry her.

Sorry to burst your bubble. Depends where you go in mumbai. On one side you can see huge slums which are filthy and on another side it is developed mumbai(new mumbai)

but once you are in mumbai do try to board this train from CST to Virar.

It's not like only poor people board these local trains but it is a huge time saver(You may cover a distance of 1 hour in just 20 minutes), i have even seen a guy parking a mercedez outside the station and boarding a local train.

All i can say this is a life time experience. the culture and life in Mumbai is very unique compared to the all other cities. You won't get this much of diversity in any part of this world.

BTW: I stay in bangalore but i do visit mumbai every 3 months.

I am from Mumbai.

There are many 5 star hotels around the Airport, you shouldn't have trouble over there. All 5 star or even 3 star hotels are multi cuisine. so, you can taste everything there, from Indian food to chinese.

Places to see:
-Matheran
-Lonawala
-Gate way of India (The landmark monument which was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai)

- Nothing special about esselworld or water kingdom. These are the standard
amusement parks, that you find in all countries.
- As patel said, you can address people bhai/behen. And talk slowly and clearly, as people might not understand your accent.

Where many Indians (in India) congregate together in cities, there is always filth. Poor plumbing, no real concern for your fellow man, people spitting their pan-juice everywhere. Your flight attendant pal might spend his time in decent hotels, but as soon as one leaves the compound of the hotel you can't avoid literally stepping in it. One could of course stay all the time in nice hotels, but it is not the real India. And if you stay in nice hotels, you can forget about getting a decent price for anything within a 1km radius.

Yes indeed. Matheran is amazing. All the old hill stations are. Check out Ooty, Simla or Mussoorie as well.

As for why Bangalore: it is the IT-city. And I do love the city. After spending weeks rambling around South India one finally gets to a place with apple pie, pizza and milkshakes.

If you're in mumbai from 6th-10th, hit me up. I'll be in pune and will probably be visiting mumbai between that time.

I think you are going to get confused with all the varied opinions that people will give here...and its always going to be extreme opinion, because Mumbai (and India) is a land of extremes. Some people say the city is fllthy, I do not agree. In parts it is yes, but the overall problem is the narrow infrastructure for a huge population. Public transport is massively crowded at peak hours and you will find lots of people everywhere!

However, its also one of India's safest cities (discarding those one-off times when Pakistan decides to send terrorists to kill and cause mayhem).

Expect positive experiences with
  • Professionalism - People in Mumbai are known for their work culture and professionalism. You should have a good time working and mixing up with the people of the company you're going to work for
  • Food - Make sure you try the local dish - pav bhaji. Most restaurants and eating joints are open till late in the night. In fact the city is known for its nightlife of a different sense - its generally safe to venture out for a walk at 1am (and even find places to si and eat)
  • Bollywood - Mumbai is where the Hindi film industry aka Bollywood is based. You might catch a film shooting. Go to bandra bandstand if you want to see the houses of some famous bollywood superstars
  • Shopping - you will find some brilliant traditional stuff at very good prices if you figure out where to shop (hint - not at the shopping malls)
  • Diversity and Culture - Mumbai is host to various religious and ethnic communities of India, which are indeed very large. Its very cosmopolitan and if you like to observe people you will have an excellent time. Make sure you visit some places of worship


Be careful of
- Auto rickshaw drivers or taxi drivers who may try to fleece you. Its not very widespread in Mumbai but its possible. Remember you pay the money that's displayed in the meter, nothing more and nothing less.
- WATER: Do NOT drink tap water. Always buy bottled water which is normally priced at Rs 15 (approx 30 cents) for 1 litre bottle

Well I would say, you should be concerned about the food here. it's spicy and takes time to adjust. Another thing cow is worshiped here, so no beef ;)

Well many people here live in paradox, it will take time to adjust. One thing for sure is that once you get used to it, you will start enjoying it. I do!
 
It will be quite an experience for you

Filthy and densly populated for sure. Dont attend any beggars..there are tons of them.

But, Mumbai is known for the spirit in which ppl live there...very very friendly ppl.
Lots of droolers (in a non gay manner ;))

Plus, if you know the right places to visit, it will be quite an experience and you will surely love it.

If you know that u'll face lots of ppl and filthyness there and you still have to go there, just avoid that thought and concerntrate on the good things you'll see there. Quite an culture.
 
Taxi drivers are thieves... If you go to a shopping complex, you can get a city guide... In that guide, they will have taxi fairs. Take that to double check.

If you are from other country, almost everyone will try to get more money from you...

Mumbai is not a big city. It is a small city, with huge population. It is overcrowded here always.

Indians are known for their programming skills. You can get excellent programmers in India(Mumbai, pune, bangalore, hyderabad, chennai). The salary you have to pay here in India is like peanuts compare to what you have to pay at US or Europe.
 
a. Get a Map
b. Carry Change ( 10 Rs, 20 Rs, 50 Rs, 100 Rs Notes )
c. Chill, its a really cool place, ppl are freindly and helpful
d. Carry mineral water
e. fix the fare before getting in the taxi / auto
f. visit national market, good cheap stuff for sale there
