I'm being harassed online by someone manipulating SEO

I'd atleast run it by a lawyer and see what they say, maybe they can make it worth your while with limited to nothing out of pocket if they feel they have a solid case even if he is a loon and getting money from the state.

I'm talking to someone. I certainly have a case but I couldn't get a court order around something like this, I'm told, until after a trial which could take years and cost a lot since I'd have to go to "real" court rather than small claims. Lawyer is looking into the possibility of getting some sort of restraining order instead but that's also not easy because the precedents are for someone who is actually stalking - either following you or at least phoning and making other forms of unwanted communication. The law, at least where I am, hasn't caught up to the realities of internet harassment so just putting up a website attacking someone isn't seen as the same as contacting them necessarily.

Spam his pages with the anchor text of your name. He'll get negative SEOed on the next penguin update.

I'd take a guess that if you spend around $400/$1k you can easily rank every spot on page 1 for your name.. It's that or the court fees.. I mean sucks either way but..

Neg the other sites pages? or get some reputation management from this forum. If you got the right budget everything can be cleared int he next 2 months

He's not smarter - he's just obsessive and has no job or life and lives off of welfare so he can spend 8 or 12 hours a day online harassing his invented enemies and building links to his attack pages. I'm not screaming, I'm looking for some practical advice (and thanks to those who have given it) and possibly some assistance from someone who has some knowledge on how to deal with situations like this. The police here don't really understand the internet or care about online harassment or cyberbullying unless someone actually threatens physical harm - he doesn't actually utter threats. As for suing - yeah, if someone is seriously defaming you and trying to hurt your reputation and your livelihood why wouldn't I want to sue him?

Where do you live? Are you in the US? There are cyberharassment laws. "Cyberharassment. Cyberharassment differs from cyberstalking in that it is generally defined as not involving a credible threat. Cyberharassment usually pertains to threatening or harassing email messages, instant messages, or to blog entries or websites dedicated solely to tormenting an individual. Some states approach cyberharrassment by including language addressing electronic communications in general harassment statutes, while others have created stand-alone cyberharassment statutes." There is also a chart that goes state by state. If you are in the US and the police in your state do not understand cyberharassment laws, show them the law. http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/telecom/cyberstalking-and-cyberharassment-laws.aspx

Dude I gotta agree with the guy who said "whining like a girl" Just buy your name as a domain. Go to every promising young social website and profile yourself as mentioned before. Backlink to your domain. It is really odd you are on BHW but your unable to get this rolling.

I had a guy showing up like in spot 3 when you searched my unusual name...he was hitting a bong...and no it wasn't me. I just got busy for a day and it was taken care of. I have never had anyone mention my bong smoking since lmfao.

Or get in contact with me via PM. Your organization I can bill and get this fixed in short order. ;)

I'm not in the SEO or online business - that's why I'm here.

In such a case it should be very easy to outrank him. Your name is a low competition keyword in the terms of SEO. Since I don't know your name I'll use John Dow as an example. Register yourself on the following networks, with 'johndow' as username:

- facebook
- twitter
- wordpress
- naymz
- identi.ca
- linkedin
- tumblr
- livejournal
- digg
- blogger
- pinterest

If the username is taken use 'johndow1/2/3/4/etc' Interlink everything, e.q. put links from wordpress to the rest of sites with your variations of your name as anchor text. For example 'Follow John Dow on Twitter'. Write some content that is relevant to you wherever is needed (may be resume).

If in 2 weeks you do not rank above your bad review, add more sites to the network. The bad review should fall off pretty quick.

This is a very good idea... also, how about blasting him with AA blog comments all with anchor texts as names -- that should bring him down after the latest penguin update. You will however have to create the social pages above with the same name (anchor text) he's targeting ... you blast him with AA, he can blast your profiles all he wants but not even a million spammy backlinks can really hurt FB ranking.

blasting a website with AA comments will not work in the long run. As suggested above you need to create numerous Web 2.0 properties and promote them for your targeted keywords. I would also buy EMDs for your targeted keywords. Buy the .org, net and .infos.

Create a 800 word document and spin the heck out of it. Post in authoritative Web 2.0 blogs. Build links those properties. Honestly, it is not that easy to rank quickly nowadays for EMDs. You will need to lots of work into this.

Invest into some Fiverr gigs!

PM if you require any more information regarding this. I do this for a living!

I like all of the suggestions here but I'd beat the fuck out of this guy. Literally these kind of tax sucking asswipes need to be put down for the long nap.

Use your brains, not your strength. Much more satisfying, civil, not to mention legal.
