If I remove categories from permalinks, will this help?

Some articles of mine are spread across different categories, I've backlinked some in one category and some in another. However, obviously they both share the same permalink keyword (not the category).

In this situation, is removing the categories to focus on the keyword only as a URL the better option?

Is that bad?

Maybe I should just use domain.com/keyword-x
